How did you hear about camming and what led you to start camming?

I started off posting pictures on Reddit which got a really amazing response. Someone on there then suggested I tried camming. I was so shy at the time, I can’t believe I actually did it! I’ve never looked back though, so thank you random redditor!

Can you describe your very first time camming? Were you nervous or excited?

I remember I was on holiday in Vietnam at the time. I was in this bed & breakfast, and the Internet connection was terrible and I was using the inbuilt webcam on my laptop. I remember not really knowing what to do, or where to go. I remember one of my first sessions; we got the countdown to doing a shower show. So I moved all the furniture in my room so I could prop my laptop to see the shower room, and then when I got in the shower I found out the hot water wasn’t working! But I didn’t want to let anyone down for tipping me, so I did the shower show with freezing cold water.

Does anyone (family, friends) know you cam? How do they feel about it or do you keep camming private?

My friends and family know. My mum was very chilled about it. She’s happy as long as I’m safe. My friends have no problem with it either. They say it suits my personality a lot. I’m very open about what I do when I meet new people now because I’ve realised that most people are totally fine with it. I made it seem like a bigger deal in my head than it actually is. Plus, people who aren’t OK with it aren’t really the type of people I’d want to be friends with anyway.

Is it good money? How can you make a good living or at least make a good supplemental income from camming?

Camming is good money if you work hard. If you treat your supporters well and you offer them entertainment then you’re going to do well. It’s good to consider camming as a supplemental income instead of a main income at first though because most people don’t have the best start. There’s a steep learning curve. Some girls are naturals and do amazingly well right away.

Why are some cam sites better fit for you as opposed to others? Are there cam sites that you feel don’t really work for you but others do, and why?

I work mostly on MyFreeCams. I work best in large public shows, because I’m very talkative so I like to have a lot of conversation going on. I also feel less shy in public weirdly. When I do one-on-one shows, I get super shy. There are cam-sites like Adultwork, and I think they suit people who are better at one-on-ones. 

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful cam girl? How can a girl develop a large following, a high ranking on a cam site, make good money, etc.? 

You have to be genuine. You have to enjoy what you’re doing. Making people happy is your job, so if you’re not happy, other people aren’t going to be happy either. Building up a following takes time and you need to be camming consistently. Same time everyday sort of thing so that people can find you easily. I don’t really pay attention to ranking but it’s useful if you’re a competitive person. I’d rather focus on my room and making sure I put on the best show I can. I think if you work hard and really enjoy yourself, the money will come.

What do you have that makes you standout, unique from other cam girls? How long did it take you to find what made you standout?

I think I was lucky because there aren’t many Asian girls with British accents camming. I get complimented on that a lot. It also helps that I’m a talkative camgirl, and that my room focuses so much on conversation. Otherwise, people also know me because I like comic books and I go to comic conventions (although only a few have dared say hello when they spot me at them) and because I also like to play videogames. 

What is the best and worst thing about camming?

The best part about camming is the nice things people say to you. I wasn’t very popular at school, and getting compliments wasn’t a common occurrence for me. With camming, people tell me I look good and that they enjoy my company or that they look forward to seeing me. It’s really helped improve my self-esteem and I’m still constantly amazed that there are so many people that like me. It makes me want to do my best so that I don’t let them down. 

The worst thing about camming for me is the time difference. I get most traffic from America, so I stay up really late to make up for the 6 hours difference. It’s pretty silly for my personal body clock, but now I have so many friends in America I would miss not seeing them in my room.

What’s a big misconception people have about cam girls?

I don’t think many people realise just how much work good cam girls put in. Because good cam girls make things look easy, when really they’re not. Cam girls put work into preparing games, prizes and all sorts. They dress up, cosplay, do themes. They work hard to make their hair and makeup perfect. Then after all that, they spend hours at a time keeping people engaged and entertaining them. So I think a lot of people don’t realise that cam girls work for their tips and they completely deserve them.

Do you ever meet up with any of your cam regulars? Have you ever and was it a good or bad experience?

I’ve never met up with anyone from cam. People spot me out and about all the time but that doesn’t count. Normally we just talk for a bit and take a selfie. I meet most fans when I attend events like the AVNs.

What makes a good cam room follower?

My favourite guys in my cam room are those that take part in the conversation in a nice way. We’ve had pretty good debates come up in my room, and people don’t resort to name calling if someone doesn’t agree with them. Those guys make my room because it’s the conversation that dictates the flow of my show. Of course, guys who tip regularly are the reason I’m able to continue camming!

Is this statement true: “Cam girls are the new porn stars.” Why or why not is this statement true?

I have my own porn site (harrietsugarcookie.com) and I’ve been lucky to meet and even make videos with quite a few pornstars now and I can safely say that camgirls and pornstars are completely different. They occupy completely different worlds. You cannot make a comparison. I could list all the differences but it would be a completely new article.

I think the main reason they are not the new pornstars is we say porn actor and pornstar. But we don’t call any camgirls a camstar yet. The difference in popularity is enormous. Pornstars are more well-known than many celebrities. Just look at their searches on Google Trends! Whereas camgirls have a small following on an extremely popular camming website – and even the most popular camgirls don’t get that many more eyeballs than the least popular. After all, how many relationships can a girl really maintain properly at any one time?

I think camgirls could be the new pornstars. And some do seek out that kind of fame. In fact camming seems to be a stepping stone for many porn performers now. But that also flows the other way and many pornstars cam to supplement their income.

A more important point is to say that camgirls are becoming the new porn producers. More and more girls are seeing the value of making their own content. If that trend continues maybe it will work like a performer takeover of the industry. Maybe today’s camgirls will be tomorrow’s Evil Angel et al?  

What are your long-term goals with camming?

I don’t have any long-term camming goals. My website is my main project. It’s funny how even though I don’t need to cam anymore that I still do it. It’s fun and I have so many friends there. I’m an introvert and generally prefer to do my own thing quietly at home. And when I want some social interaction I tend to be like my fans and head online straight to a camroom, sometimes to my own but more and more often into other models. And yes, I tip. It’s hard not to when a model lights up the room and makes you feel special.
