View Full Version : Is masturbation for men BAD, despite all we've heard?

;)

I realize I'm opening myself up here to a lot of  about our "precious bodily fluids," Soldiers, but this is a semi-serious question I have.

I've done more than my share of "polishing the surfboard" over my years as a red-blooded heterosexual Y-chromosome advanced primate.

We have heard over and over again that unless you follow religious teachings against the sin of "onanism" that masturbation (if not compulsive) is psychologically and physically harmless.

But now I'm not so sure anymore. Some things I read of late have altered my thinking.

The reasoning goes like this: regard your body as nothing but a chemical factory. You have blood nourishing organs, neurons producing chemicals for consciousness, etc.

But what is the most refined substance a male body produces?

Spermatozoa.

What happens if it isn't reabsorbed back into the body? We constantly make more of it, true, but could there be something in semen that nourishes our own body in ways we're not aware of? When you beat your meat plenty and spill it, is the feeling of fatigue you sometimes get indicative of something deeper going on?

Of course, the argument can proceed that there is no difference if you're having sex, you're still going to lose semen. But there is a difference as I see it, because the act of sex with a person could produce different chemical reactions in the brain and body than 'solo sex.'

In your own experience, did you feel 'better' or just 'more frustrated' if you abstained from whacking it for any significant period of time? Do you think masturbation a totally 'free' activity or do you pay for it in some way biologically or spiritually?

I have trouble sleeping when I go without. That's reason enough for me to do it daily

I don't buy it. The chemicals are produced before the sex act, not during it, and either way, the same semen gets released. I could be off base, but until I see evidence to the contrary I'm going to stick with this simpler explanation.

I doubt it - sperm have a half life, and if they're not 'ejected' after a certain amount of time you will reabsorb them and produce new ones anyways... may as well get a little pleasure out of it! :p

I'm no M.D. or Ph.D., but that sounds borderline unhealthy. I know it's a stress reliever, but it shouldn't become a remedy for other problems.

Doing it daily might jeopardize your sperm count or the amount of load you have when the actual time arrives to use it.

IMO, try to limit yourself to once a week at most.

My main problem with long periods of time without it is that I tend to have sexual dreams and awaken with a need to change pajamas. Guess if you don't rid yourself of it after a while, your body does it for you.

There is some argument that frequent ejaculations assist in prostate health

There is the assertion in Tantric Practice (yet another non-scientific 'religious' condemnation against masturbation) that 'the spilling of seed' reduces lifeforce.

Who knows?

Maybe semen is poison and if we don't get rid of it, it will kill us!!!!!!!!!

For some of us, that is a desired outcome. I hope to jebus that my sperm count is running in a deficit.

Why would you want that? Some people are not blessed with a downstairs semen factory that works overtime.

I read this in Men's Health awhile back.

I've read that sperm "die" after about 3 days, so I don't see what the benefit of keeping that in your body is.

The material they are made of has to go somewhere as it breaks down. Could that material be beneficial in some way?

I remember hearing Howard Stern say something about this once. He said that he didn't do it that often cuz each time the spoog was spilled it took a day of life away. Did anyone hear this or am I thinking of some guest that was on his show?

I dunno about being bad for men, but i hear it's pretty harsh on kittens.

(Amazed it took this long for someone to use that joke.)

Well, considering that men have been doing it since the beginning of time, and no serious ill-effects (other than a strong forearm) have been documented yet, plus it does serve a valid biological function, I'd say we're good to go- and go- and go...;)

Didn't Rod Stewart have DSB (Deadly Semen Backup)?

As I understand it, your sperm does age and as a result, you would be better off with fewer "young" sperm than a wad of "aged" sperm. Another vote for letting the puppies fly as often as you like.

Dang there are a lot of odd beliefs in this thread. But actually, yes, ejaculation does decrease the risk of benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate).

So after how much does your prostate disappear completely? ;)

Take it for someone with borderline BPH - my doctor's prescription was do it, do it well and do it often. No $H!t - his recommendation to me was to go buy some new "blue" magazines and have myself a good ol' time.

Did I mention I really, really like my doctor?

And no, not in that way either . . .

:p
