OK I'm desperately trying to settle an arguement here...I have 2 parakeets...and I swear sometimes one hops up on the other one and just goes to town...
I mentioned this to somebody...they said NO WAY...parakeets dont have sex...and Im like then what are they doing if that isnt it.
I know this may be the most ridiculous post ever...but I am being very serious here...I would like to know what is going on here.

How else would we get baby parakeets?

Since I've seen pigeons, doves and other birds jump on top of each other and flap their wings, I'm assuming that's how they look when they're having sex.

I assume that many people haven't seen this birds do it before is because they hump during the night when people are sleeping or when nobody is watching them.-smile-

But do they really do it? And how do they do it? Missionary, woman on top or parakeet style?
I'm curious too.

I've seen a pair of Ostriches *go to town*.
BTW, of course male birds have penises (penii?) Why else do you think the males are called "cocks?"

I know that male parakeets masturbate on a daily basis (don't ask how i know). I think the actual fertilization of eggs does not involve coitus. Egg shells are soft when they are first layed, and can be penetrated by sperm.

 You're saying that the males fertilize the eggs AFTER the female lays them? Er...I'm not sure about that.
Yup, it has to be the silliest question ever.
I can't believe that so many people skipped biology lessons at school or haven't watched nature documentaries on TV.
Both sexes have an orifice called a cloaca. Sperm is deposited in the female's cloaca by the male via his cloaca (no penis - and the testes are internal, near the kidneys). The egg is formed in the female's ovaries, less the hard shell. The egg meets the sperm in the oviduct, is fertilised, passes into the uterus, the hard shell forms, the egg passes out of the cloaca. One egg is laid per day no matter how large the clutch of eggs.
(Disclaimer for the pedantic: details may vary in some exceptional species).
The photo in Seeker's post shows two birds mating. The male is said to be "treading" the female (for fairly obvious reasons).
And, yes, the cloaca (as its name implies for the classicists among you) the cloaca is connected to the intestine too.
Edited PS: Why is this mature?

I see they're into biting. I guess the bird societies have to have their Marv Alberts too.

I know the answer to this question (because my parent has
3 parakeets). Parakeets do NOT have sex, they reproduced
a-sexually (spontaneous cell-divisions) Furthermore, if you
put 3 parakeets in the same cage, two will be straight and two
will be gay and they will fight until there is only one left and
it will be lonely. Don't believe me, do the experiment yourself.

Correcto.
This is a wind-up.
If they reproduce asexually (which no other animal larger than a single cell does) how can they be gay, bi or straight? They would have no concept of sexuality.

So inquisitive. Here is the answer. Because they reproduced
asexually they can be gay, bi or/and straight, no?
