View Full Version : How do you become a porn star?

My company is looking to lay off 30% come october. If I don't find another job a career change from IT may be in order. Seeing how porn is always growing, how do you break into it? I heard the money can be pretty good.

Judging by the subtext of your post ("lay", "come", "growing", "break into it"), I'd say you're off to a good start. Throw in a few random "dongs" and euphemisms for vaginas, and you're good as gold.

From what I've heard, guys make about 10k a movie. But it's impossible to get started unless you've got a real good connection (like Uncle Ron Jeremy) or you've got a smoking hot girl that won't do anyone other than you.

Oh man...is there anything more telling of our economy when we have IT people wanting to become porn stars?

why don't you call a porn company and just ask?
I would rather be the guy behind the camera. And the guys do not make 10k per movie. They make 500-1000 per movie.

Hmmmm. Wonder how much editors make....... :D
Actually I used to have a website bookmarked that had adult industry classified ads. Unfortunately (for me) they always seemed to be for performers, not production or post positions. I'll see if I can track it down when I get home, however, teplitsa. If you're interested.

It's hard to find reliable "woodmen" so that's why they use the same guys all the time.
They always say that the way to break in is to get a hot girl who wants to do porn and have her say she'll only work with you. Worked for Racquel Darrien's boyfriend.

not as simple as it looks...
and no.. for a b/g scene you make $300 - $500 per. guys don't get paid ****, have to remain hard in front of people with cameras and lights and all kinds a **** going on around for at least 45 mins, you have to take direction, must not waste the pop. if you show up, can't get hard, you get sent home. now SOME guys make hella bucks but they have made a name for themselves. ron, peter, tt boy, are top talent. but they got super dick control. that's a talent.
now, if you want to make some money.. do bareback. i'm sure someone else on dvdtalk can speak about these.
girls on the other hand get $500 - $1200. depends on type of scene. i've seen the rate sheets, had to coordinate some of the talent, and shoot while doing my main gig as editor.
i wasted a whole night once waiting for a guy to get hard. he was to shoot a scene with his g/f. you'd think that would be easy.. she stroked and blew him for an hour.. nothing. i turned off the camera and let them have private time.. he finally got hard, but the minute i turn the camera back on.. limpy. we sent them home.
on the other end of that spectrum.. i shot a b/g/g scene. this guy had to bang two girls and stay hard. the girls asked for breaks after 5 - 7 minutes of good hardcore ****ing and the guy had to stroke himself to remain hard. finally finished the scene 60 mins and 9 positions later.

How do you get in the production side of it though. I would rather do the behind the scenes type of stuff.

depends which company you worked for.. as an editor, i got $800 per project, but in the end they screwed me (not in the good pr0n sense) and they dropped my pay. i didn't stay long after that.
i will proudly say that i edited Slumber Party 9, 10, 11, 12, Pornological 5, and some scenes for Shane World.

the best way for you to go, if you want behind the camera (no pun intended) would be to shoot your own amateur video... gonzo amateur has a good niche. shoot and edit it... send it to one of the distributors.. make sure you have signed releases/age verification and maybe they'll sponsor you.

that i never figured out.. basically if you shot the video yourself.. you paid for it yourself.. you make money when the distributor pre-sells so many units into the home vid market. if memory serves me correctly, shane's world costs about $20K per video to make.. i have no idea on the back end of how they make money other than by units sold to retailers. guaranteed units.
now this is what was at my gig.. what vivid, wicked, all those guys..i have no idea how they operate. if given a shot at having my own title again.. i don't think they'd have a niche for what i want to do..

First question you may be asked: How long is it? Or be told to "drop your pants."

From what I heard about this. don't Guys usually get the very low end of the cash flow in most cases and in any real sense, the most money to be made by males are in Gay porn.
Many High ranked Male Porn stars used to/ started out in Gay porn.
it's a TRICKy buisness.

Hey, you're and IT guy so you know enough about computers. Just set up your own porn site and charge for memberships. Get a few skanks together and a buddy to film it all, and viola! They must make some money, because sites like this are all over the place.

Linear or nonlinear edits? I was wondering if the adult industry has gone all nonlinear yet.
(Maybe my training could come in handy some day after all. :D )
And you shoot, too? You have certainly earned my respect. I've gotten to the point that I got out of freelance because I couldn't stand shooting anymore for directors who couldn't do their jobs if their lives depended on it. Then you catch sh1t because you didn't get the shot they wanted. (Of course a lot of it was government work, but video if video, right? ;) ) I only shoot now as favors to friends.
Still, I love the creativity available to you in post. I don't know how different it would be for adult features though. How much flexibility do you have with the final product? (I tend to like to play around with cutting a scene, which I imagine might be a plus, depending on the director. Of course that last few things I worked on I had no director, just abandoned footage left by a friend.)

both.. i did rough cuts (tape to tape  ).. then took that into an edit bay. add titles, basic transitions, sound sweetening and music, master to beta, send it off to the distributor.

hated shooting.. if anything.. i played second unit and picked up shots that the idiot cameraman/director didn't think of. in fact, i had to beg and plead with the guy to light his scenes properly. he handed me scenes that were so dark i couldn't see anything, then he expected a miracle to get 10 mins worth of usable footage.
if editing porn has taught me anything.. it's made my editing a lot tighter (excuse the pun). i edit faster and really make scenes flow a lot better than i use to.

Peter North did gay porn under the name Matt Ramsey, it's quite surprising to see him bottom and take it up the ass, since nowadays he enjoy's banging women.

Yeah, he's in Med School @ UH.
My friend who just graduated from JABSOM says that most of the nurses he's seen aren't that good looking, though. :(
Hopefully criptik28 can find somebody to fulfill that nurse fetish/fantasy, though. :D

Hey, I started in linear cutting. I started at a local cable access station when I was a kid. VHS and 3/4" stuff. Later, after school, when struggling to make money freelance I taught myslef a little Video Toaster but I was still editing 3/4" and SVHS, with a little Hi-8.
I didn't learn nonlinear until 4 years back when I went to work for a company that wrote a nonlinear editing package. Since then I've learned enough that I hope to actually get paid for it.
Maybe. ;)

You sound like me. I started as a photographer, though, so I tend to want to get in there and at least frame the shots as close as I can to the way I picture them.
I only shoot the stuff for my friend because otherwise he'd give me footage with no lighting what-so-ever or framed with so much headroom you think you're bird watching. Just try to explain white balancing to someone with next to no camera experience. Still, at least with a computer I can correct some of those mistakes. Plus editing down his projkects gives me a lot of practice correcting those mistakes, if you know what I mean.
