Vivid will be coming out with the first dvd, hd, and blu ray release simultaniously with Debbie Does Dallas, a new release, not a previous released title.
What are your thoughts on Blu ray and HDDVD?
How many of you own hd players?
How many own PS3 or blu ray players?

I'm usually an early adoptor, but I gotta say Howard, I couldn't care less about blu-ray/hddvd at this point. I'm not planning on jumping into the fray until the format gets settled into one clear winner.

porn in hd is going to startle some people with the way some women look

That's why we are releasing both, let the public decide.
The women will look fabulous, we have this thing called makeup, and we're doubling our order with Maybelline.

makeup wont solve all the problems. Its already a problem in tv and hollywood movies

Blu-ray evil.. Worse (potentially) DRM than HDDVD and Sony are just being asses in general ("you cant find a ps3 anywhere"). Gotta put the chips on HDDVD. And to add to the above, also an early adopter here, and also dont care about it.. Unless they get a bit more chilled on DRM, bring the price down, and figure out a common format, i couldnt care less. DVD is pretty good quality for now.

I have to say screw Bluray, the price for players sucks, and no backwards or forwards Discs, so HDDVD is the way I went all the way.

Uh, I thought Blu-Ray said no to porn. Like a big fat NO like they were proud of it.

Filters will.

Along with poor lighting, dubbed vocals, and bad music. Filters are one of my biggest pet peeves in porn. Every time someone shoots a porn with more than a $18 dollar budget you can almost guarantee they will be using filters. I suppose they are trying to make it look more like a "real" movie but all it does is make the entire film look like it was shot slightly out of focus. Just Keep it simple. No ones buying "One in the Pink, One in the Stink" for its superb cinematography.

Actually blu ray didn't say no to porn, it's the people that replicate blu ray.
It was not easy finding someone to do it for us.
I do not have a blu ray player, nor do I have an hd player, but evidently a lot of people do.
The blu ray people are staunch supporters, personally i think hd will win out.

Congrats on the Blu Ray release!!! I myself own an HD TV and HD DVD player and i am very excited to see the push for the new technology in this industry! I can assure everyone ... it is very worth it. Seeing the actual true wetness of a girl during a scene ... is amazing. It really does give you the sense of feeling like your standing in the same room.

3 Million HD TV's are in homes now ... and if you have walked into a Best buy, that's pretty much what you can buy. Toshiba is about to drop the price on their players(granted those are HD DVD). I suspect within the next 2 years this will be the standard. Still not sure which format is going to win out though.

Vivid is always on the cutting edge and it's nice to see you guys making this push too!

xoxo,
Megan

Howard, there is a lot of fighting going on in the high definition "war" and whichever side wins, DVD Talk will be there to cover it. ;)

In answer to your original questions, I bought an HD-DVD player to cover porn and I'll buy a Blu-Ray player (probably a PS3) if I get a chance to review DDD (and whatever else you release) though I hear several of my associates are jumping up and down to review your high definition stuff too so we'll see. Congrats on doing "whatever it took" to convince a single replicator to handle your stuff, especially since ALL of the replicators turned down your competition (admittedly, some of their stuff is more hard core than yours but not that much in the case of Wicked Pictures), but it's good to see Vivid picking up the gauntlet as they did in the good old days when standard DVD was new. Yay You!

PS: someone had a question for you in another thread http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=466084 )

I have a PS3, so I'll admit that I'm curious to see how Blu-ray porn will look. I wouldn't put all my eggs in the HD basket yet though. I think (this is just my opinion) that Blu-ray will win over HD-DVD but it will end up being more of a niche product and won't really replace DVD (something will eventually, but these two formats ain't it). It might get somewhat more market penetration than laserdiscs did, but not a hell of a lot. Of course, there were porn LDs, but I don't think they sold anywhere near big numbers, that's for sure. At any rate, it's cool to see Vivid jumping in with both feet.

I have a question:
Whats the point with this whole new 'lets make a TV or DVD picture quality as clear as possible!'
Ive seen HDTV and its nice, but you can only go so far with picture quality.
Especially with porn, there'll be somethings you dont WANT seen if you switch to HD or BR
just my 2 cents.

i really think it's a mistake for anyone to go blu ray for business reasons. HD DVD is like open source. Blu Ray is owned by Sony and they want to turn home entertainment into a game console type business. if blu ray wins what is to stop sony from jacking up the licensing fees in 5-10 years?

Howard: Thanks for making the right decision and releasing on both formats. Picking only one at the outset only makes things more difficult for everyone.

HD DVD only here.

The Blu-Ray Disc Association (or whatever they are called) can go fuck themselves.

I'm actually really curious about what porn looks like in HD. I likes my porn dirty, and can't really think of anything on a girl I wouldn't want to see in high-def clarity. Although it'll be awhile before I get either of the next gen players, when I do, you better damn well believe there will be porn in my collection.

First let me note that I do not buy a lot of porn. Wife and I enjoy it on occasion and have "collected" about 10 movies over the 18 years we have been married. So I'm sure I'm not your target audience.

I have had a PS3 since about 12/15 or so. However, I still buy SD movies (non-porn) and so far have about six-seven BR movies (non-porn). During the same period have also about about three SD movies (non-porn).

I don't see the need to buy every movie from now in in BR just because I got something to play them on. I'm going to find it hard to pay $30 for a movie after paying close to $12 or so. Most of the BR titles I have were once I have gotten deals on making them very close in price to SD. I have not yet come across a movie so far that really make me want to get it in BR regardless of price. Tho I recently d/l the free HD trailer for Casino Royal on my PS3, that might be the first one. Still, $27 is hard to swallow. Plus I'm looking for BIG movies with lots of colors, lots of scenery to take advantage of BR.

So would I buy porn in BR? I don't think so. I don't really seen the need unless the cost was very close to SD. I'm all for really great quality, but the ultimate in resolution is not exactly what I'm looking for when I buy a porn movie ;)

Whats the point of an HD release if it means you'll be using every trick in the book to cover for how these girls might look in high def? Just odd.

I have both formats via the PS3 & 360 add-on, so obviously I'm going Blu-Ray because of the HDMI. I thought porn on BR was a no-no??

Own a HD DVD player and buy hardly any porn, but I might check it out if the price is right. Every new release I buy will be HD DVD if it is available. I plan to import HD DVD titles from overseas for titles that are exclusivly Blu Ray in the States

It amazes me how many people know about the claim that Sony has banned porn on BluRay, yet almost none of them have read the statement from Sony saying there is no such ban.

I have been watching the Debbie Does Dallas TV show on Showtime-HD and if the HD discs look anything like it, they will be superb. It was nice actually seeing a show like this done in HD since most reality shows are never broadcast in HD.

I still don't understand why there are all these whiners about seeing porn in HD (not necessarily in this thread but in many others before it).

If you are watching quality girls in a quality porn it will look great. If you prefer fat chicks with zits on their asses, then yeah, HD will look bad...but that shit was nasty to begin with.

I think everyone who makes a lame clichéd comment about "OMG porn in HD ewwwwwww" should be instantly and permanently banned.

1. Some of us actually LIKE reality. If we want to watch fake, phony porn, we can watch anime/hentai. I personally am not bothered by even rather substantial "imperfections" as long as the action is hot - in fact it enhances the illusion that it is real vs. just a couple of performers earning a paycheck.

2. Even if you are bothered by the imperfections, HD will raise the bar and cause producers to find hotter girls. And anyway, the big studios have girls that are damn near close to flawless even up close and personal already, so the original point is not even valid.

2b. And to those porn stars complaining that their breast enhancement scars are going to show more, all I can say is good riddance, maybe we can get some NATURAL girls to take your place now.

Whats the point of an HD release if it means you'll be using every trick in the book to cover for how these girls might look in high def? Just odd.
I can't possibly put into words how much I agree with this comment. If you're going to make soft-focus filtered crap, you might as well not bother with HD. We want to see these lovely ladies in full HD glory; please don't fail in that regard. I want the clarity of a Discovery-HD documentary on these releases!

P.S. I have HD-DVD via the 360 add-on, and prefer it over Blu-ray due to Sony's lack of consideration for the end consumer in pretty much any decision they make (even less so than other companies, that is). But I think the right decision for you is to support both, at least until one of them dies off, so I hope you continue to do so in the immediate future.

It's just that people know that every time Sony opens their mouths in public the concepts of honesty and accuracy fly right out the window, and their statements are often rightly rejected as garbage until proven otherwise.

In this case their empty statement, while maybe true in some small technical sense, was belied by all the Blu-ray replicators refusing to do it. As Howard mentioned, they had a hell of a time getting one of them to "flip". Do you really think it was just coincidence that they all had this stance, and there was no behind-the-scenes direction or meddling from Sony and/or the BD Association?

Blu-Ray for me too. I want nothing to do with HD-DVD.
