How porn scenes are filmed

This is a question that occurred to my wife and I when we were watching a little adult entertainment, and I was curious what insight those in the biz could give. Apologies if it's a stupid question.

The question is - how "scripted" are porn scenes? Is it more like figure skating where there are required elements and what happens in between and the order of the required elements is up to the performers? Are the scenes very tightly scripted? Does it vary by director?

I'm going to guess that it varies by director and company, but I know with Digital Playground and Robby D, they pick performers that are going to have good chemistry together, get us through the set up/dialog (which is usually scripted), and while they may sometimes say "ok, be dominant here" or some other kind of character thing, they pretty much just let us have at each other... keeps the heat nicely :)
