I don't really know, but some reasons might be rebellion against someone/something, the taboo against the act (which to some people is reason enough), or maybe they had some experience in the past which introduced them to the act and they liked it for no other reason than it turned them on.. you can't really look too deep into some things, because you can start coming up with all manner of reasons and excuses for them.

The "lack" of a penis is so traumatic, so shocking, that the little boy must turn his eyes away and he usually fixates his gaze on another part of the mother's body: foot, shoe, pubic hair, etc. That thing the child focuses on becomes the "replacement" for the "lost" penis of the mother--this object also becomes the fetish. It is a way for the fetishist to cope with the lost maternal penis (and the possibility of he, too, losing his own penis).

The proper term is "fetishist" not "fetisher," and the point about mommy missing a penis, though not accepted fact, is an important step towards understanding fetishism--a form of behavior that is linked to the castration complex (the child's fear of losing his penis, since he thinks that daddy cut off mommy's penis because she was being "bad"). This is Freud's theory (see his essay entitled "Fetishism") which was taken up and altered by his disciple Lacan in the 1950s.

Maybe someone's been too busy practicing their fetish to show up here. It is the weekend and studies show that people with fetishes prefer Friday through Sunday for their group meetings.

I would like to comment on this apparent belief that 'fetish' =! 'normal'. Technically a fetish only becomes 'abnormal' when it is required for sexual arousal; most of what is usually termed 'fetish' is more accurately a hobby, interest, or 'spice' into a sex life [See other thread asking 'how to spice up sex life'.] Very similar to other habits; washing your hands five times a day is 'normal', washing them 1000 times a day is 'abnormal' because it gets in the way of your having a normal life [much like a 'required' fetish can get in the way of having a regular sex life.]

Who's to say what is 'normal' with regards to sexual activity? The ancient Greeks liked buggery, many societies only like man-on-top or long hair or things like that, the old Victorian English liked those tight constraining corsets; any of those could be considered a fetish. Like Nick Danger said way up there, why is ok to like a woman's butt or legs, but say, liking her feet is considered a 'fetish'? Or long hair, some guys really get off on long hair [head hair, not armpit hair or anything--but that could be another example.] Or even homosexuality, could that be considered a 'fetish'? A male homosexual is usually definitely into the penis, and could relate to the Freud thing.

I really don't know if I buy 'mommy has no penis' and Freud as a reason for it; I had thought that the details of Freud's work have been pretty much discredited.

Now, as I said in my first paragraph, the situation where the object of fetishism is REQUIRED to enjoy oneself sexually is definitely a psychological issue; but remove the sexual aspect of it, and it merely becomes another obsession [like people who have to wash their hands fifty times a day, etc.] But assuming the OP's question can be rephrased as, 'Why do some people like sexual stuff I don't like?', then it's simply a case of diff'rent strokes [pun intended]. Do you like being on top? Do you like spanking, or being spanked, or being tied up? Do you like anal? Some of you will say Yes to some of those, and some will say No.

The only thing that makes a sexual activity a 'fetish' is the number of people who are into it....ie, S/He likes mummification, or those creepy leather masks, or WAM, and I/a large portion of the society don't, therefore, s/he's got a fetish.

And again, around the world, it's all relative--I have seen British porn mags with women dressed in plastic trash bags, cutting themselves out--doesn't do a thing for me, but whatever floats their boat.

As a society, I think we in the 21st century, and especially Americans, are incredibly prudish with regards to sexuality. Walk in any 'adult bookstore', you'll likely only see a couple of types of films: orgies, anal, lesbian, maybe a little bondage/leather. And that's it. We don't have a problem with our young people [16, 18, 20] watching Schwarzenegger blow away people on the big screen, or Jason/Freddy lacerate people, but show a couple of people in bed being creative, or show a man full frontal, and the rumours start to fly. [Note: not to say that I think we should be giving ten year olds porn, but that there's more to sex, and a health sexual life consists of more, than just missionary/reverse missionary/etc.]

Anyway, I don't think I really answered the original question, but I did want to comment on the apparent perception of 'fetish=abnormal.' If I had to say 'why,' I'd say in some cases, because it 'feels' like they're 'sneaking one in' or being rebellious [probably most specifically related to the scat/watersports] by enjoying something usually termed 'dirty'; and in many other cases, because it feels/looks good. There can definitely be underlying issues; ie, someone might like spanking because he's really a misogynist, or like being spanked because they have very low self esteem, or like wam because they like thinking of women as 'dirty', but I think those are the vast minority of cases.

If you like it, if your partner/s likes it, and if you're both old enough to make educated decisions [or not get arrested], go for it. Just as long as the 'fetish' is an addition to a healthy active sex life, not a replacement for such. Many a long-term, vanilla sexual relationship has benefited from being 'spiced up' in some way.

We are all fetishists in one way or another. I, for one, never believed that fetishism was abnormal. Most people around here are fetishists, but their desire for the maternal phallus is sublimated in other, more acceptable, ways (i.e. collecting DVDs instead of tresses of hair). Most fetishists are also collectors, don't forget...

On the one hand, I think they'd probably enjoy having their feet rubbed and their toes sucked. On the other hand, they probably wouldn't want the guy doing it to enjoy it too much.

I have a foot fetish. But not in a sexual way. I don't rub my penis against women's feet or anything sexual like that (although I have sucked toes on one or two occasions). There are quite a few nerve endings in feet and I believe that some parts of feet and/or toes are considered errogenous zones.

I have a foot fetish in much the same way that Eddie Murphy's character in Boomerang did. I don't think I could stand to go out with a girl who had nasty feet. I guess I could bone her, but if I were to have a serious relationship with her, I honestly think that she had better have nice looking feet.

I like it when women wear open-toed shoes, sandals, slippers, etc. so I can see their feet. If I see a woman with nice feet and a nasty face/body, I'm not going to want to bone her. But if an attractive girl has nice feet, the nice feet will likely elevate my attraction to her.

I thought I'd jump into this. I have a fairly intense foot fetish, but just for like, the appearance of a woman's feet. I'm not into nibbling on a girl's toes after she's been wearing tennis shoes for 8 hours or something. I find that as icky as anyone else would. I know that there's a connection between foot fetishism and smells and licking and so forth so I just wanted to make that distinction. If a girl's feet are clean or if it's just like, a foot massage or something though, I'm there.

Speaking for myself, I can trace the beginnings of my fetish to a particular incident, *very* sexually intense for me, that occured when I was pretty young. No, it wasn't abusive or anything and I'm certain no one knew what was going on, the girl who was "affecting" me in particular. Heck, I didn't even understand what was happening. But it's stayed with me and I'm certain that incident is the source of my fetish. I think it's pretty clear that, for whatever reason, fetishes are a product of some incident that occurs in early development. You just have to hope that it triggers a harmless fetish and not a potentially dangerous one.

I definitely group a girl's feet with her breasts and butt and legs and face and the other parts of her body that are overtly sexual, from most objective perspectives. And I usually look at a girl's feet first if I find her cute overall, though butts are starting to really gain my respect
