So I just picked up my HD-DVD player. Looks like Pirates and Island Fever 3 are the only HD-DVD available? Any recomendations?

Actually, neither of them are HD DVD (though Digital Playground will likely release such versions of them in the future). Sorry...

Island Fever 3 (From Empire): Release Date:9/22/2004 (do the math).
Unless they went ahead and released a new version without the benefit of their wonderful publicist menioning it in the trades (she's the best in the business by far), they are referring to the same kind of "HD DVD" they used in Pirates; WMV-HD 720p format (which looks good but doesn't play on HD-DVD players from what I understand). |

Thanks for the help Don. This is from digital playgrounds site "Disc 2 is an HD-DVD, which will play the entire movie in true High Definition resolution on any 2.5 GHz PC or any WMV-HD player."
So this will not play on the HD-A1 or the Xbox360 HD-DVD add on? |

You're welcome! Like my fellow reviewers, I try to help where I can. You are correct about the listed devices though unless they changed something from when I asked our resident HD experts (who fussed at my original review of Pirates for not mentioning the difference: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=18503 Currently, there is a race to be the first domestic company out with a true HD release (not the Digital Sin sampler) with most people expecting it to be from Vivid, Digital Playground, or Wicked Pictures (I've strived to get Sex Z Pictures to release Corruption in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray for the show in January too). Playground has the biggest back catalog of titles shot and edited in HD, making the conversion easier from what I understand, but the industry "players" are pouring some money into the idea for bragging/advertising rights. I'm not allowed to reveal the VERY limited details of what I've been told but it will prove interesting to see who gets it done, and done right, first. We'll keep you posted regarding developments in this area but with the AEE show right around the corner, I'd like to see it firsthand to get me off the fence once and for all and make the plunge myself (current plans are to pick up a second or third generation HD-DVD and Blue-Ray in 2007). |

Note: I meant "players", not spammers (cut and pasting too early in the morning again...).

So what do you think of HD-DVD so far? Are the details so lifelike and sharp that you can literally count the tiny hairs on their necks? I'm just curious. Thinking about upgrading.

As far as porn goes, there isn't any out yet so it will depend on how well the companies master and shoot their work. Given how some of it looks on standard definition, I expect a lot of complaining when they do come out though. On the plus side, both of the new formats seem to enhance the look of regular DVD's when they upconvert them so don't let vocal advocates of waiting dissuade you from getting one format or the other. That said, some of the companies are betting heavily on Blu-Ray since it is one of the capabilities of the upcoming Sony Playstation 3; Vivid going on record as supporting this format first because of the gaming system (even if the PSX 3 sells a hundred thousand units_not enough for a commercial success of games, it will be a captive market for thousands of porno lovers since sales of even 10,000 for a movie are considered highly successful). I suspect HD DVD will get the nod from many of the lower end companies due to the cost factor but they are rarely early adopters of formats so get such a player to enhance what is already available as your best bet. PS: Apparently, my earlier message found one of the words not allowed (a generic word at that), coming back as "spammers". |

Most of the HD-DVD titles look better but not so much better that many of my circle of friends would drop $50. Some are even truncating the extras (Coming Home HD) but with all the news about the format dying off, Blu-Ray not only became a more viable this year but will succeed HD-DVD very shortly. Oh, and yes, some of the productions are so nicely done that you can count hairs on necks. ![]() |
