Why are some movie trailers so bad?

I thought the purpose of the trailer was to entice the viewer to rent or buy the DVD. So why are some porn trailers overly processed with nanosecond snippets and negative (as in a photographic negative) images and all manner of special effects that make it impossible to see anything? It looks like an audition clip from someone trying for a job in music video productions. Whenever I see this type of trailer, I think they're compensating for a weak movie by attempting to dazzle us with a ridiculously overedited trailer. I prefer to see a straightforward trailer showing selected clips (a few seconds each) of every performer in the DVD. If I like what I see, that's what will make me want to see more. If it is an unwatchable blur of rapidly changing and weirdly processed images, I will use my imagination and imagine the actual DVD is garbage. Does someone think these tweaked trailers are effective marketing tools? Or are they just cool creations for the folks who created them?

This is my take on it.

Many porn video editors and photographers came from the mainstream. Heck, some are still mainstream, and do their porn stuff on the side.

These mainstream professionals still work the way they used to work, with quick cuts, super short snippets, music, and at times, use special effects to grab a viewer's attention. Mind you, the adult industry allows them much greater flexibility with their craft, but they rarely take advantage of it.

I'd rather see a Bang Bus type trailer than a porn trailer with an overdose of mainstream influence.

Christoph Clark's trailers tend to be this way, and I don't think he is trying to cover up weak sex, more likely his editor is bored out of his mind editing gonzo sex and the trailer is the only place they can do something a little different.

I have seen some pretty bad trailers in my day!!!

Here are a few i find consistent:

I think a lot of studios have some really good trailers ... I know Jonni Darrko's are good (http://www.evilangel.com), ours are funny and sexy(http://www.shanesworld.com), check out most os NS/DS's here (their trailers are hit and miss for me http://www.newsensations.com/trailers/trailers.php , Hush Hush has some really great ones http://www.hush-hushentertainment.com/new_hush.php and as far as on a beutiful scale .. i'd have to say digital playground (http://www.digitalplayground.com). There stuff is very well produced and edited!

I won't posted that bad ones ... well because my mom told me not to say anything if i couldn't say something nice ;-)

I wish your level of class was a common occurrence in the industry. Your observations on trailers is shared by me; SW's making my friends and I laugh for extended periods of time (though they always have to go the bathroom right after watching some...maybe it's something in the water...).

On an unrelated note; what would it take for SW to distribute Teagan's upcoming titles now that she's branching out on her own with Tyler? It sounds so natural; Megan and Teagan, that I couldn't pass it up.
