Extras: The best extra on the DVD was the 54:31 minute long Behind the Scenes feature by Keni Styles. It had a lot of clips to it, some nudity, some exposition of the plot, and even some goofing off. There was then a choice between playing the movie with only the sex (47:36 minutes) or a separate option to play the show only as a story (50:24 minutes), each feature allowing fans to get what they want. There was then an 8:56 minute featurette called Ted and Todd's Rushes Filmed by Sasha, the clip focusing on Phoenix's scene, two photogalleries, some info for other companies rounding it all out. One more extra to be aware of is the DVD case, the book styled device also home to a lengthy book full of pictures, storyboard elements, and other anecdotes worth mentioning; this is the kind of extra that you can't download online too, making it invaluable for collectors and retailers alike.

Audio/Video Quality: Malice in Lalaland was presented in 2.39:1 anamorphic widescreen as shot on 35mm film by director Lew Xypher for Vivid. This version of the movie was encoded in the MPEG-2 codec with 480 resolution, particular care by the extensive staff made to enhance the visuals of the production. The video bitrate hovered around the 6.2 Mbps mark, the sheer oddness of the movie enough to give some replay value for those looking closely enough at the visual elements to see the wealth of detail included here. The flick was reportedly shot in Europe (or by Europeans) but right out of the gate, it was clear to me that the movie had a completely different look to it than anything coming out of the usual porn strongholds, making me want to see it repeatedly just to see the increasing detail each time I ran it through. The lighting wasn't exactly perfect but it illuminated the cast and sets in a superior manner to similar ventures, the folks at Vivid likely picking up that this amounted to a "special" release well worth some additional accolades. The editing was MTV style much of the time and the compositional work strongly favored the entire cast, not singling anyone out as a favorite, with the timing of the music often matching up nicely. The color palate seemed to change as the situations did too, an approach that I'd like to see more of in such a wild feature but not in all the works I review. The audio was presented in 2.0 Dolby Digital with a plethora of additional languages included as a bonus, even subtitles for those that care, using 192 Kbps as an audio bitrate and the usual 48 kHz sampling rate. The vocals took the back seat in most of the scenes, allowing viewers to make certain connections by the strengths of the visual elements alone. This is where the diverse score came in, a lot of hardcore music used to punctuate the production in a way that fans of the alt-porn movement should immediately recognize. It wasn't exactly my favorite kind of music in most cases but it certainly began to grow on me, a shame that the package didn't include an isolated score as a bonus CD as some movies have in recent years. In all though, considerably more effort was put into the aural aspects of the movie, some rough edges still needing to be polished up.

Body of Review: Vivid has been having a banner year of late, using outside distribution deals with parody princes and erasing their contract roster to take another needed step in redefining themselves. While they are becoming increasingly associated with celebrity sex tape releases, their true strength has long been with the way they read the market and adapt, resulting in such movies as Malice in Lalaland. The movie was shot elsewhere to be distributed by the company, a sensible move for the folks at "Miss Lucifer" considering most people will consider the movie a throwback to the alt-porn phase the company promoted so heavily. This was a sophomore effort for director, Lew Xypher, his years working on music videos helping him develop a style all his own when it comes to porn. The movie is based on the first novels of Lewis Carroll, updating the "Alice in Wonderland" saga to modern times with enough sheer force of will to make it work much better than a similar title released a few months ago by a competitor (Alice), popular Sasha Grey starring as "Malice" as she escapes a psychiatric hospital and starts a journey to another place and time. To call this a parody is probably inaccurate though since it scores on multiple levels as much more of a tribute, the flick perfect for those who (rightfully) think that most porn is cookie cutter similar. The back cover described the movie like this: ""Malice In Lalaland" is an innovative Miss Lucifer Productions film shot on 35mm. Based on the two books by Lewis Carroll: "Alice In Wonderland" and "Through The Looking Glass", we stay true to a strange world and its even stranger characters. Malice (Sasha Grey) manages to escape from an asylum with the help of Rabbit (Stephen Powers). During her escape from Queenie (Andy San Dimas) and Jabbowski (Dirty Fred), she has the most sexy adventures ever. "Let's Fuck 'N Roll!"" Scene Six: Juelz Ventura, Sadie West, and Keni Styles, were up next in a similar bedroom scene where the trio donned head masks and went at each other, the ladies as likely to blow him as go down on each other. Juelz was particularly aggressive about her taste for pussy, even Keni servicing like he was in lust with his new friends. I'm glad the masks didn't last long and the vaginal riding was so active, Sadie holding on for dear life as she took cock and fingers inside her snatch. There was a lot of taste testing and passion, Phoenix definitely elevating the scene's heat and energy substantially. It ended when both men beat off in unison to her hungry mouth, the scene cutting away quickly.
Summary: Malice in Lalaland by director Lew Xypher for Vivid was not the kind of porn I would want to see daily but it had a lot to offer in terms of music, artistic approaches to sex scenes needed to keep them from getting stale, and thematic issues that one can decide for themselves whether it has any meaning outside of being a stroke flick. I would have liked to see some of the sexual trysts last a lot longer and more fully develop the chemistry of the performers but this was clearly a very strange flick I can rate as Highly Recommended for those wanting a porno off the beaten track. The replay value and strokability wasn't always as strong as the latest gonzo epic but as a stylish masterpiece pulling the viewer in and dazzling his senses, it was quite well made. In short, Malice in Lalaland won't be for everyone but those of you brave enough to try it on for size with an open mind and perhaps a bit of mood enhancer, you should find that alternatives to old fashioned porn are not dead, they have just evolved another step; taking a cue from other music-centric fuck flicks but rewriting the standards all the same.
