Extra's: The best extra was easily the director's commentary with Michael Zen and a couple of crew members (writer and make up artist) as they discussed a lot of what went into making the movie. Such commentaries reveal a lot of the behind the scenes dramas and where everyone was at a certain point in time; acting like a time capsule of sorts for the release. If only some of the older pornos I've watched had similar commentaries, a lot of things about the jizz bizz would be made public to an interested group of porn historians. There was also a set of four trailers, a photogallery and some weak biographies of the cast but this was well before Wicked Pictures came to dominate the features market.

Audio/Video Quality: Satyr was presented in the usual 1.33:1 ratio full frame aspect ratio it was shot in but there was a twist this time; it was shot on film. That helped give it a big budget look and made some of the contrasts possible (video has certain limitations, as does film, but film can look much better when done properly), improving the appeal of the visuals. There was some artistic lighting going on and some people may not like it as much as I did but in general, it looked good with minimal grain most of the time and some very accurate colors on display. One of the more negative aspects of the visuals was that a slightly soft focus was employed that didn't always work for me (I don't care for airbrushing either). The audio was presented in stereo audio with some nice separation between the channels and decent dynamic range but it was still somewhat lower quality than Wicked Pictures makes these days.

Body of Review: Long ago, when the lovely Jenna Jameson was still ascending to her place at the top of the porno pantheon, she was picked up as a contract performer for Wicked Pictures. This decision ultimately led the company, as well as Jenna herself, to the top of the field in porn. She became a phenomenon that few could argue was the biggest thing in porn for years, propelling the industry into a form of mainstream acceptance (at least comparably speaking) that it has since improved on in many ways. That said, one of Jenna's first starring roles for Wicked was the movie Satyr, a movie about the mythical beast and an Island of Dr. Moreau story to go with it. The basic story is that Jenna is researching mythology with the help of "Dr Jade" (AKA: Asia). We have some of the industry's leading ladies perform for us in a variety of sex scenes which include straight, oral, rimming, anal, facials, DP's, lesbian, toys, multiple partners and masturbation. If you haven't seen the movie and are a big fan of Jenna Jameson, you'll want to check it out but here's a breakdown of the scenes by cast as I saw them years ago:

Scene One: The first sex scene was a short one where Missy was masturbating while eating some fruit. It wasn't as long and explicit as I'd have liked but it helped set the tone for this well-paced feature. It then moved on to an oral only threesome with Asia, Mickey, and Brad. After watching the movie, I thought that the director's pacing was very good although during my initial screening, I wanted more. A good porn movie should always leave you in suspense as to what will happen next sexually and this one fulfilled that need in spades. Unlike many formula porno movies, this one didn't seem to have a mechanical set of scenes. That made it more enjoyable.

Scene Two: The next scene had Mickey and Asia going all the way after a short session of oral and rimming. I could tell you that Asia looked gorgeous but that would be redundant. Every woman in this feature looked great and the makeup director, Lee Garland, pointed out how he enhanced every one of them with just the right look on the audio commentary.

Scene Three: Jenna, wearing a tiny pair of shorts and a white bra, began masturbating with a crystal on a bed at night. Missy saw her but initially didn't interrupt as she diddled herself into a voyeuristic frenzy. The two then started doing one another as part of a fantasy sequence as Missy took the dildo in her mouth to fuck Jenna's heavenly pussy. Jenna gave some oral pleasure too and Missy eventually fingered the superstar's ass with a lot of energy. Yum!

Scene Four: We then progressed to a scene called "The Bacchanal". This scene started out with Chloe and Mark having a great time. They did it all so well that I wondered why they never received nearly enough acclaim for it. The camera angles and lighting during this scene were a bit more stylish than most of the movie and it had a great impact on the heat during the scene (a rare exception to the usual rule about camera tricks weakening the heat).

Scene Five: The movie then went to Jenna with Mickey and Brad. At the time, Brad was her husband in real life. During this scene, I noticed that he was having erection problems. That was probably the only time during the movie that the sex was a bit of a letdown. Luckily, Brad made up for it later with some good old fashioned loving.

Scene Six: The next sex scene was between Asia and Missy. Both of them were very hot and I wished the scene was longer. In any case, fans of lipstick lesbian action or the two stars will love this scene a lot. The heat the two projected as they licked and rubbed one another showed they were doing it for more than a check; something a number of contemporary performers might want to learn about in their own movies.

Scene Seven: The next scene was a particular treat for me. It was a three-way between Stacy, Peter and Tom. She took it in each hole and enjoyed every second of the action by the looks of it. I have not seen her look better in any other movie before her retirement. Fans of DP's will especially like her here although I'm sure they'd wish the scene lasted much longer.

Scene Eight: The last full sex scene was between Jenna and Brad. They were in full makeup, dressed as Satyr's and looking a bit silly but the action made up for it. Even though you won't buy into the premise of modern day satyr's and the fantasy storyline, you'll notice the heat between the two stars here as well as the chemistry they showed which far surpassed their earlier scene together. Facial fans will see Jenna take a large load, something she was always criticized as not doing by the unwashed masses of gonzo fans, and I have always liked this scene a whole lot.

Summary: I really liked this movie for the sex. Everyone looked great and the sex was super hot. The movie was shot over 8 years ago and stands the test of time. Wicked pumped a lot of money into this feature and it showed in every scene. My complaints about the movie were minor compared to my likes here. Jenna's acting abilities when this movie was made were very limited. Next to the rest of the cast; particularly Asia, Mickey and Missy, she seemed a bit out of place when there were lines to be spoken. However, once her clothes came off; she was as hot as anyone with a look to match! The extras were good as well although I wish there was more to offer consumers. I liked the production people's audio commentary. It would have been nice to include one or two of the stars on the track, particularly Jenna herself, as well but that's probably asking too much. In many ways, having the director on the commentary is better than the stars because he usually sees the big picture, especially Michael Zen. This is one of those cases. Granted, you may only listen to the commentary once or twice but it helps see how the movie was crafted; unlike so many porn movies where they're obviously thrown together with little thought. I'm going to rate this a Highly Recommended for all the right reasons and aside from Jenna fans, a lot of others have proven to like this movie (it had been nominated for dozens of awards when it came out; winning a number too).

This Don Houston "retro-review" was written long ago before the so-called Professor of Porn had much experience writing reviews. Since that time, he has found Wicked Pictures to have a lot of good releases like this this one and seen more porn than almost anyone reviewing on the internet.
