Audio/Video Quality: When the Boyz Are Away, The Girlz Will Play 1 was presented in the usual 1.33:1 ratio full frame color as originally shot by director Skye Blue for Jill Kelly Productions. There was some grain in the sex scenes, especially the darker scene listed below, but the composition of the shots used did manage to enhance the look of the gals and the other visual aspects were pretty solid for the most part. I don't recall seeing any compression artifacts, video noise, or other major flaws. The audio was presented in monaural and wasn't bad either although it seemed pretty basic, even for a movie shot so long ago.

Body of Review: The porn viewing public has long held that a lesbian scene or two is a good thing to include on a porno since it is a common fantasy held by many. Just looking on my shelves I can see such varied titles as WTBA 16, Big Toys No Boys, Girl Crazy , My Ass Is Haunted, The Connasseur, and Evil Pink that all centered on lesbian loving so in a moment of looking back, I recalled a title I enjoyed that was a little less explicit called When the Boyz Are Away, The Girlz Will Play 1 by Jill Kelly Productions. Here's what I said years ago when I reviewed it: "The idea behind this one is to provide 5 unrelated sex scenes with women only action. Between the scenes, we get on the street interviews by Silvia on questions about sexuality. The women she questions
are all JKP regulars (of yesteryear). In any case, the scene set up's are minimal for those of you who don't like non-sex stuff to get in the way of your enjoyment. Each of the scenes includes toys and the regular lesbian antics." Since that time, JKP has offered a mixed bag of sexual tricks but I had some fun with this DVD and thought revisiting my older review would be a cute way to take a look at the past. Here goes:

Scene One: "Silvia Saint and Keri Windsor go at it in the bathroom. Keri is upset over the ritual of preparing for social combat and Silvia points out an alternative. The scene was fun, energetic and warm with the ladies taking their time to get physical."

Scene Two: "Taylor Thomas, billed as an introductory performance, and Envy have a food filled fun fest in the kitchen. I thought it was kind of warm to see Envy covering Taylor with all the makings of a hot fudge sundae and then licking it all off her. It was a warm scene." Here's what I more recently wrote about the scene (Best of WTBAATGWP 3) to give you an idea of how things change over time: "Envy and Taylor, a couple of moderately attractive gals (one brunette and one blonde), had a food scene in the kitchen on the wooden countertop. Many of you have told me you like seeing women covered in food (like the chocolate syrup used here) and lesbian scenes are often enhanced by such action. The use of ice cream was pretty warm too (so to speak) but the scene has one quirk that you'll either love or hate; the women were so heavily made up. I've never been a fan of piling on the war paint and while I liked the action, I had misgivings about that aspect of the scenes (in general too). I remember being the first reviewer online (or elsewhere) to review JKP DVDs years ago (their publicist sold me copies in advance; yes, I paid for them) and liking this more then than now but it still appealed to me."

Scene Three: "Summer Cummings and Skye Blue, the most implanted couple here as well as the least attractive (update: I still like Skye and would kiss her butt any time), get together in the garage while working on a motorcycle. I will give them credit for having a lot of chemistry together even if I thought the scene wasn't arousing. The use of a strap on dildo was pretty cool though."

Scene Four: "Kelsey Heart and Alex Foxe get it on in a bed. The scene was the most mundane of all with little to comment about. It was just a bit below average in most respects."

Scene Five: "Silvia Saint, Adajja, and Gwen Summers have a great time. Silvia is dressed like a gangster while her friends are dressed up like strippers. The threesome is very well done with lots of heat. I watched this one several times and didn't get bored with it."

Summary: When the Boyz Are Away, The Girlz Will Play 1 "is a DVD where if you like lesbian style play, this one may be for you. It has a bit different perspective than some of the old Bruce Seven movies, Jim Holliday movies or other respected directors in the genre and that is to it's credit. Most of the ladies look good and the action is often very warm. The technical qualities were usually above average as well which helps make
this a bit better than average overall. I'm a fan of the wonderful but departed from
porn Silvia and that's always a plus for me to see (note: she has since returned to porn, yay!). I will say that the DVD cover was among the most eye catching I've seen
lately and I liked it very much. That said, I wanted to let it be known that the cameo appearances by a number of the stars should not have been advertised as though they were in sex scenes. Heck, Jewel De'Nyle even gets half the front cover and this is simply wrong! If you want to advertise a performer prominently on the cover, you'd best be prepared to have at least one scene with her. I lowered the rating on this DVD due to this problem although I admit I liked 3 of the scenes a lot." So, in retrospect, I thought the movie had plenty to like with a couple of scenes dragging, but the standards of value have long since left this one on the side of the road (it was too short with far too few extras) so the best I could do for it unless it was value priced would be to give it a rating of Rent It.

This Don Houston "retro-review" was written long ago before the so-called Professor of Porn had much experience writing reviews. Since that time, he has found Jill Kelly Productions to have a lot of good releases and seen more porn than almost anyone reviewing on the internet. Keep in mind that his comments accurately reflected his fresh viewpoint of the time he first saw the movie.
