Extra's: The best extra was the 10.5 minute long Behind the Scenes feature. There was a little bit of sex going on from the scenes but most of it was just a short series of interviews where the gals said they were 18 years old. There was also a slide show, some trailers, and spam in the form of sex hot lines.

Audio/Video Quality: Barely Legal 52 was presented in a decent widescreen color with an aspect ratio of about 1.85:1 as originally shot by director Jane Waters for Hustler Video. Jane has been making porn longer than some performers have been alive (to hear him talk about it), working on many high end productions for other directors. The general visual quality of the DVD was much better than the dearly departed Clive McLean provided in the first 50 volumes of the series with a sharp focus, perfect fleshtones, and decent (though not perfect) lighting that all but eliminated the grain. A bit more fill lighting would've helped it look even better and I saw no compression artifacts or video noise but my biggest complaint was the composition of one shot that simply didn't enhance the look of the gal. The stereo English audio track was about average, with the vocals easily heard and the music as generic as ever. There wasn't any significant separation between the channels or high end dynamic range but most people don't buy a porno from this series searching for such qualities (although there are companies providing that). In general, it looked much like Volume 51 of the series so if you liked the way that one came out, you'll be happy here too.

Body of Review: Hustler is definitely one of the big boys on the block in porn with their acquisition of VCA, exclusive arrangement with Vivid, and their own multitude of adult material that stemmed from a little magazine published in Ohio. Fighting for your right to jerk off to slutty babes established founder Larry Flynt as an icon in the field like few others, back in a day when you could go to jail for offering pictures and reading material involving consenting adults. One of the company trademarks so often copied is the Barely Legal series that offers up younger gals having sex on camera and with the passing of Clive McLean, the series could've been lost forever. I liked his last edition, Volume 50, better in many ways that replacement director's Jane Water's Volume 51 but it managed to show some potential. In general, the series shows a female cast being within 5 years of 18 (i.e.: "barely legal") and today's review of Barely Legal 52 proves Jane is getting better all the time. Here's a brief breakdown of the scenes by cast and action, noting no condoms were used and one scene had anal:

Scene One: Kama Sutra Lesson: Sedona, the gal in the upper left hand corner of the front DVD cover, was up first with Steven St. Croix outside by a babbling brook built in someone's back yard. The two got acquainted a bit and she gave him a belly dance before they took it inside where he showed her a book of Kama Sutra positions, making it up as he went along (causing her to laugh out loud the whole time). The scene itself was pretty basic after that with her taking his penis inside her pussy in several positions without the usual progression of a lengthy blowjob to start off the action. If she appeals to you in terms of looks, you might like her more than I did but even his tiny pop shot to her stomach was weak.

Scene Two: Airplane Flying Lesson: Autumn Bliss, the cutie featured on the front DVD cover (with the big picture on the right hand half of the front DVD cover), wanted to learn how to fly without the use of drugs. Her partner was Jay Huntington and the two of them made out in and around a small airplane at the hanger. Aviation enthusiasts might want me to discuss the plane itself (since it was a Piper and this is a porno) but I'm no expert in aircraft so I'll pass. In terms of looks, she was the best of the batch this time, looking to be about 20 years old with a mostly fit body and pretty face. Her red shirt and tiny white skirt appeal was unmistakable although the sex itself was oral and straight only. She appeared to have a good time and actively participated in the action though, even doing some PTM (pussy to mouth) so fans will rejoice at his huge pop shot to her face.

Scene Three: Mountain Cabin Afternoon: Lexi Love, one of the two gals not shown on the front DVD cover, was up next as she bicycled to pick up her mail before riding back to a mountain cabin. While not the most facially attractive gal of the cast, she had a fairly tight body with just enough body fat to make me think she was close to the age of 18 years old. Wearing a plaid shirt and blue jean shorts with white panties, she appealed to trucker Jerry as she thumbed through is stash of nudie magazines and masturbated. He entered thinking he'd have to kick some ass but soon found himself getting a piece from her as he kissed and rubbed his way into her crotch. She gave a blowjob with the precision of a stripper needing rent money and he was soon plugging away at her by the outdoor railing of his cabin (note to self: move into the hills and buy a cabin). The scene ended with a facial and wasn't bad to watch as she seemed a natural for porn, just in need of better make up.

Scene Four: Racing Car Lesson: Jeannie Marie Sullavan, the sleek gal shown on the lower left hand side of the front DVD cover, was up next in a black outfit ogling a shiny red sports car. Van Damage was the mechanic in the stall and asked her if she "had what it takes" to which she applied in the affirmative. This led to her washing the car (that was pretty funny actually) and for those who've never watched a gal wash a car…YUM! While she's another one in need of better make up (and maybe a skin peel), from a moderate distance she looked fine so when her all natural body was in action with him, I thought she had a lot of potential. She went so far as to do anal after the usual oral and vaginal sex, actively participating in the action in a pretty heated manner. It ended when he rubbed out a load to her face.

Scene Five: Swimming Pool Playmates: Brianna Love, the gal in the middle of the left hand side of the front DVD cover, and the other gal not shown on the cover, Karlie Montana (a skinny brunette with a squeaky voice like Cherokee's), were up next in an outdoor scene by a very expensive looking pool. They had what sounded like a commentary track as the visuals showed them in small bathing suits rubbing oil on one another. This scene looked the best of the show due to the natural lighting and the gals appeared to have fun licking, sticking and rubbing one another by the waterfall. They did use a single vibrator and a strap on dildo but this was a pretty erotic scene in spite of the toys, not because of them.

Summary: Barely Legal 52 ended on a strong note and the worse scene of the bunch was still well worth watching several times. I liked how the formula was broken out of a few times and the general visual aspects of the show were improved upon. The cast may not have been 18 years old in most cases (or at least didn't look it) but they did seem to be less practiced at the sex and that appeals to the freshness angle too. The series is still at a crossroads in terms of where it's going but I think it's in capable hands with Jane Waters at the helm and the amount of fuck for the buck has never been higher. With a bit more polish, I suspect the series to come off as quite revitalized so those of you who stopped watching awhile ago might want to give it another look these days. As such, I'm going to rate it as Recommended since the gals, the technical qualities, and the extras all helped make it worth a decent grade.
