The Movie:

Before this review starts off, let it be known that a lot of Vivid's output happens to leave ye ol' Mooninite luke warm. That's not to say that don't have good material - The New Devil In Miss Jones was excellent and one of the best releases of 2005, no doubt – but since that release, there hasn't been anything that's really impressed me.

Thankfully this new feature from the Teravision line, written and directed by the heavily inked up Spyder Jonz, managed to renew this reviewer's faith in one of porndom's most famous studios. The story revolves around Lucy Lee, who has died and now that it is her judgment day, is given an ultimatum where she must defend herself in the court of eternal damnation (held over by Ron Jeremy himself) and own up to her sexual digressions or pay the ultimate price. It's heady stuff for a porno movie, but don't let that scare you off – as you'd expect it's fairly superficial in the grand scheme of things, and this movie wastes no time skimping on the sex. Speaking of which…

The only draw back is that for whatever reason in post production they decided to fuck around with the lighting and the speed and do some wonky editing here and there, which kind of pulls you out of the moment from time to time. Thankfully this doesn't happen for the whole scene and the bulk of it is pretty intense stuff.

It's nice to see Vivid do a feature-based film that doesn't suck! The sex is hot throughout and while the storyline isn't going to win any awards, it keeps things moving and it is fun to see Ron Jeremy in a supporting non-sex role as one of the afterlife's more interesting curators. Lucy Lee makes for a very sexy lead and she's definitely got what it takes to carry the movie. She fucks like a champ in this one and even manages to emote convincingly enough in the non-sex scenes to be believable – really, she's not bad at all in this movie.

The DVD

Video:

This shot on video production looks pretty clean presented here in a reasonably stable (sadly) non-anamorphic 1.85.1 widescreen presentation. There is some mild edge enhancement in a couple of spots and a noticeable bit of mpeg compression evident in some of the darker colors and the blacks but other than that, there's not a lot to complain about. Skin tones look nice and natural especially during the lesbian scene, the compositions are dead on and the cinematography looks great, and aside from the fact that this digital video production looks like a digital video production and as such suffers from the minor defects usually associated with the format, everything is coming up roses as far as the look of the film is concerned.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track is quite sufficient. The dialogue comes through cleanly and clearly as do all of the moans and groans. The soundtrack is mixed in properly at a respectable level throughout and bass response is nice and lively. Overall, for a porno movie, this is definitely a better than average effort.

Extras:

Unfortunately, aside from chapter selection, the only extra feature at all on this DVD is a still gallery consisting of roughly twenty-five hardcore action shots from the feature. At least you don't have to sift through half an hour of phone sex advertisements to get to the feature though – it's nice to see Vivid has stopped doing that.

Final Thoughts:

Appetite For Destruction was a surprising success. Lucy and Tera heat up the screen while they're together and the rest of the scenes range from decent to excellent as well. There's not much here in the way of supplements, which is a shame as some interviews might have been interesting, but the audio and video are perfectly fine. Recommended.
