Extra's: There were some decent extras offered up this time, including my favorite of the bunch being the 11.5 minute long Behind the Scenes feature by Graham Crack Herr. There was some interview material, additional nudity, and a sense of playfulness amongst the performers and crew that served to establish the movie as full of chemistry. There were five bonus scenes that fans will probably enjoy too, but they were from older flicks and looked poorly mastered so your mileage may vary. There was also a short text biography for lovely Monique Alexander, two photogalleries, a second side for the DVD cover that showed four new titles released on DVD (instead of the less explicit version of the primary cover as the company has used for years), some spam (including a front commercial that could be skipped by remote control), and trailers to movies like Dinner Party, Sexy Young Thing, Colors, and Illicit.

Audio/Video Quality: The American Dream was presented in the same 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color it was shot in by director B. Skow for Vivid Entertainment. For those unfamiliar with his background, suffice it to say that his experience outside of porn is superior to many inside the industry and it shows up in his movies, including this one as shot in HD, though presented in the SD format (for now). The lighting was reasonably well handled as was the camera work, limiting the grain, video noise, and other distracting flaws seen all too often in porn these days. The composition of the camera angles managed to enhance the look of the ladies but the sharpness of the picture was often lacking; weakening the overall effect. The fleshtones were largely accurate (except for scene two) and the DVD mastering well done, making it a decent looking title (though not the best from Vivid in recent memory). The audio was presented in a 2.0 Dolby Digital offering with the vocals sounding flat and the music pretty decent (I liked the country music tune during Monique's first scene the most-and I'm not a C&W fan at all). For some reason, the levels were lower than usual but aside from the added background noise from doing so, the dynamic range was average and the separation of the vocal track nonexistent.

Body of Review: B. Skow has become one of my favorite and consistently appealing directors at Vivid Entertainment over the last year due to the manner in which he tends to elicit great performances from his cast. His latest release is The American Dream, a feature that seemed to be half finished as it presented the story of a man who was trying to make a better living for his family after knocking up his girlfriend. The cover said it like this: "Jay is an Austrian down on his luck...he just got his girlfriend pregnant but has no money. His father suggests that he go to America and make money - that way he can send his earning back to the mother-to-be. Jay has one more problem...He is a sex addict! Once he gets to America, he ends up having sex with someone from every job he gets...resulting in him getting fired! Will Jay find his true calling?? Could it be actually getting paid for sex??!! It is "The American Dream" after all!" In fairness, the story fell flat as it seemed that some portions scripted were missing, perhaps due to outside concerns, but I liked the cast enough to appreciate the flick the sex if nothing else. Here's a brief glimpse into the scenes by cast and action, noting that condoms were only used in Monique's scenes:

Scene One: Katja Kassin, a world class anal queen from Germany, was up first engaged in a 69 with Tony Pounds in a bed. While his lizard flicking approach was kind of lame, her performing like it felt great was pretty believable so I let it pass as I waited for her to slob his knob. Summary: The American Dream by director B. Skow for Vivid Entertainment was his weakest feature to date for me as the plot elements seemed thrown in without cause too often and the sexual portions appeared to be truncated with some technical limitations I have not seen from the man in his previous offerings. There was enough heat to check it out as a Rent It but on a really big fan of the cast will enjoy The American Dream much more than that.
