The Movie:

Carlos Batts' Young Hollywood, from Adam & Eve's Independent Adult Cinema line, is a solid 'porno with a plot' starring a fantastic cast that makes it easy to overlook the fact that there's really not much of a story here at all. Essentially Kimberly Kane plays a 'celebutante' who prowls Hollywood's seedy side with her partner in crime, Ashley Blue, as they look to experience all that the city has to offer them.

Chapter 1 - Lystra And Mandy Morbid: These two lovely lesbians prance around outside sporting some sexy lingerie before they start playing with one another's breasts. They kiss and then start to go down on each other and then head inside for more of the same. They use a dildo and then one of those weird vibrating egg things you see in porn a lot but rarely seem to encounter in real life. The gals bust out the strap on and give that a try and end this particularly fun and pants tightening scene with some lovely girl-girl deep kissing. Yummy!

Young Hollywood experiments with visuals and structure but is still firmly rooted in the formula of the traditional porno movie. This is very much a XXX fuck film, it's simply one with a more visually odd style and with a quirkier soundtrack. The production values are admirable and the cast and crew all look good and play their parts well. It's a successful endeavor when you consider that Carlos Batts is honestly trying something different here, and he has succeeded at that. Open minds are required, but this is an effective and fun slice of artsy alt-porn.

The DVD

Video:

This 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is going to irk some people. There aren't any problems with mpeg compression or edge enhancement but there's been a lot of post-production image manipulation applied to the picture in what we can assume is an attempt to bring some creativity to the look of the picture. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The image is often times visually appealing but there are moments where it's simply a little too much and much of the on screen action is obscured in a way. Those who can get into the artsy side of porn will probably be fine with it but those who want 'straight up lights on and everything in close up focus' fucking might want to look elsewhere...

Sound:

The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track puts the music up a little too high in the mix for this reviewer's tastes. The soundtrack is good and makes use of some decent music but let's remember that sometimes it's just as hot to hear the sex as it is to see it. That complaint aside, the dialogue is clean and clear and there aren't any problems with hiss or distortion.

Extras:

Aside from chapter selection, a still gallery and a weblink, Adam & Eve have also included a behind the scenes documentary (15:32) that shows us what it was like on set. We see a few of the girls getting into wardrobe and make up and we see a few scenes being shot but there aren't a lot of interviews here or anything to give it much context.

There's also a bonus scene included here from Eden (24:01) where Bree Olsen has a three way with Jean Val Jean and Tommy Gunn on a lovely tropical beach, the perfect place for a DP and a double facial! Aside from that, there are a handful of trailers for other completely unrelated DVD releases and a trailer for the feature itself.

Final Thoughts:

Young Hollywood is an interesting and experimental XXX movie that won't be for all tastes but which will certainly please those who dig their pornography with a little avant garde seasoning. The art direction and soundtrack are a little over the top but the sex scenes are hot and unique and the picture is worth a look if you don't necessarily want mainstream smut. Recommended.
