The Movie:

Kimberly Kane's latest directorial effort for Vivid-Alt plays out around a young woman trying to get out of a life of drugs and prostitution to make it as a country musician in Nashville! Unfortunately for her, there are some who would like to keep her where she is and stop her from even attempting to make it. If that weren't the case, we wouldn't have much of a story, would we?

But what about the sex? I knew you'd ask...

Scene 1 - Audrey Hollander And Faith Leon: This fantastically sexy girl-girl scene kicks the film off with a bang. These two look beautiful together, all pale white skin and big pretty eyes as they go back and forth doing their nifty lesbo thing. Faith picks up the hitchhiking Audrey and they soon pull over to the side of the road to make out and tongue fuck each other. The film is shot in a fairly gritty style but the aesthetic is consistent with the story and the tone and Kane has done a very good job seeing this project through.

The DVD

Video:

Morphine looks really good in this 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Keep in mind that some scenes are intentionally grainy looking, but otherwise this transfer is solid. Colors look natural is a little one the muted side (probably for artistic effect) while the cinematography seems to play up the natural contrasts between the performers. Slight shimmering is present but there aren't any issues with mpeg compression artifacts or heavy edge enhancement.

Sound:

The English language Dolby Digital 2.0 track on this disc is pretty decent. Dialogue stays clean and clear and there aren't any problems with hiss or distortion. The score in particular sounds quite good (why wasn't this included as a bonus CD - Vivid Alt has done this in the past and this is one of their best scores!) and the levels are all well balanced.

Extras:

First up is a commentary track with director Kimberly Kane who is joined by April Flores. There are a few interesting tidbits of information in here - the gun used in the first scene is a prop but Kimberly mentions she has fucked a girl with a real gun before. It wasn't loaded. Kane does most of the talking here, noting that she has to have things her way when working on a movie. They express their admiration for all the performers and talk about where much of the film was shot. They giggle and laugh a lot during their scene together and Kimberly talks about what parts of the movie she was concerned would be trimmed and why. It's a reasonably interesting track and it seems like all involved had a good time on the production.

Up next is The Sugar Shack Confessional Featurette (9:11) is an interesting documentary where Kane explains what the Sugar Shack is and what it was like working there. It was sort of a strip mall of debauchery run by a taxidermist. She talks about some of the strange jobs she took there and what it was like living and working with some of the bizarre characters who hung out at this fine establishment. Apparently she almost died trying to dance to the full length version of Freebird, proving that too much Lynard Skynard really can be bad for you.

Rounding out the extra features is a cool slideshow of behind the scenes photos set to music from the score, trailers for The Doll Underground, The Bad Luck Betties, and Dana DeArmond's Role Modeling. Animated menus and scene selection is also included.

Final Thoughts:

Morphine has got some ridiculously hot sex scenes and style to spare. Those who don't already dig what Vivid-Alt are doing won't be won over but anyone with an appreciation for slick visuals, sexy wardrobe, rough sex and killer compositions should give this a chance. It's pretty far removed from the gonzo norm but it's very well made and plenty hot. Highly recommended.
