Audio/Video Quality: Top Guns 9 was presented in the same 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color it was shot in by director Jimmy Scaffnetti for Mercenary Pictures as offered in this MPEG-2 encoded title (the resolution being the standardized 480i). Jimmy has been working in the industry for some time now and displayed a lot of talent with the camera, whether or not he is credited for it being beside the point. His work for Erik Everhard is among the best distributed by Jules Jordan Video, a fact insiders seem to agree with from my dealings. The bitrate varied a whole lot here but seemed to hover around the 4.2 Mbps mark, enough for the picture to show some detail if not as good as it could have been. The lighting was pretty solid too, limiting the amount of grain and video noise in most cases, giving the ladies some illumination worthy of their respective statures. His composition of the scenes was also well handled, leading to decent editing that made the movie among one of his better efforts from the time this was shot; albeit with some of the shaky camerawork left in to keep the raw energy present from the looks of it. The audio was presented in 2.0 Dolby Digital English with a bitrate of 192 Kbps (as usual) but there was no obvious separation between the tracks and the dynamic range was about what I expected. I could hear the vocals and the music was never a huge issue but it wasn't anything substantially different than what Jimmy shoots for Erik Everhard either.

Body of Review: Jimmy Scaffnetti is a likeable director of porn that is much like most men in how he just wants a nice piece of ass once in awhile. He translates that into his movies in a way that the bored, jaded, or old school "it's just a job" types can't comprehend, the rough edges sometimes exceeding the value of the polished efforts of his peers. As a director for Mercenary Pictures, Jimmy has shown a willingness to follow the rules set forth by others though, rules not generally present in the more gonzo styled works he shoots for Erik Everhard, lending a different air to them, his latest in a long time making it my way in the form of Top Guns 9. While voting for such award shows at the AVN Awards, XRCO, the Xcritic year end lists, and a handful of others I have been able to see a few titles by the company in between their rare fits of sending screeners, the most consistently appealing on technical and performance levels have always been those directed by Jimmy. In the case of this series, the use of high end and popular talent certainly helps elevate their stature, less reliant on the appeal of the company owner in scenes by comparison. The advertised action here was that all the ladies did anal as well as interracial, the dynamics of the individual scenes solid enough to merit checking out every time. Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene One: Shyla Stylez, the busty blond bombshell featured on the right hand side of the front cover, was up first with Lexington Steele and Mr. Marcus, the men liking what they saw as she came outside by the pool to join them on the overcast day. The middle scenes were not always as consistently appealing but each of the ladies in the show added something to the final product, fans of interracial should find this one relatively solid in terms of the technical values and quality of performances. In short, Top Guns 9 was nearly as good as Top Guns 7, one of my favorite volumes in the series, the technical matters handled competently enough to merit a nod.
