Extras: Unlike some recent releases by the director, this one was blessed with a couple of bonus scenes, the first being a second anal solo scene by Julie Knight with a HUGE inflatable toy, lasting 8:06 minutes. I suspect the unseen male hand assisting her was Jonni's but all he did was shove the toy in for her since it was so slippery. The second scene was a POV hummer by Francesca Le, presumably on Jonni himself or Mark Wood, that lasted a mere 3:07 minutes. Those were followed by a 15:02 minute long Behind the Scenes feature, Jenna Haze starting it off by prancing around in her PJs. Not all of the ladies were given a chance to participate but it was still fun. There was then a photogallery, some filmographies, and a list of websites but nothing else.

Audio/Video Quality: Open Ended was presented in a standard full frame 1.33:1 ratio color as shot by director Jonni Darkko for Evil Angel in the MPEG-2 codec used for standard definition porn (with a 480i resolution for those keeping track). The bitrate hovered on the lower end of the scale much of the time, typically in the 2.9 Mbps range though jumping around a fair bit too; going higher as often as not. The lighting was often flat and solid, reducing the amount of grain, video noise, and other flaws directly related to the technical aspect. The fleshtones were perfect with the crisp look of clarity I like when Jonni is spot on with his work. The solo nature of the production meant that the men were absent as the ladies had to concentrate on servicing themselves without any of the mopes being present. The composition was almost always favorable to the ladies and the editing seemed to enhance the look of the show more than a little bit, thanks to the extensive efforts of Eddie Powell who also made the cool DVD menus stand out with his skillful touch. In general, this was another very visually appealing piece of work though thanks to the efforts of the production staff as well as the cast. The audio was provided in a 2.0 Dolby Digital English track (at a 192 Kbps with a 48 kHz sampling rate) was thumping but truncated at the right moment after the tease to allow the vocals to get the spotlight during the scenes.

Body of Review: Jonni Darkko has long been a meat and potatoes type of director, even before he started his distribution deal with Evil Angel some years back. Over the years, his works have evolved into a series of niche products that catered to a central theme, often heavy on POV blowjobs or musically themed gonzo acts that have shown some care in their making. Last week I was sent a flick of his from February that seemed kind of interesting in the form of Open Ended; a movie showcasing a series of female masturbation scenes with a single lesbian outing but all of them including anal with large toys. I've seen such porn before and my biggest complaint is the standoffish nature of the women most of the time but that was not the case here. In Jonni's movie, each gal spoke to the camera as if sending a loved one a naughty stroke scene for their personal pleasure, perhaps soldiers in Iraq needing inspiration for their own hand to gland action. There was no doubt about it though, some of the toys were so huge that this feel into circus act sex territory as far as I was concerned so if you aren't into that kind of thing, be forewarned that the scenes each catered to that central dynamic, the names of the ladies speaking volumes as to how heated their acts were. The company website described the movie like this: "Open Ended is Jonni Darkko's latest visual treat - an erotic showcase of sexy ladies using various large toys and translucent dildos slathered in lubricant to fuck their buttholes. Nine scenes are in the aforementioned solo style, and there's a girl-girl ass-licking interlude with foxy Adrianna Nicole and veteran gaper Aurora Snow. These cuties go wide!" Rather than give a blow by blow accounting of the solo action included here, suffice it to say that each gal provided a bonified (or is that a "boner-fied"?) bit of butt sex with a large toy, the lesbian scene with Aurora Snow and Adrianna Nicole as good as expected from the duo. No genetic juice or population pudding was spilled here and if this is what you're looking for, you will be especially happy with the ending results but here's a list of the ladies in order of appearance.

Summary: Open Ended by director Jonni Darkko for Evil Angel suffered only from a handful of overdone vocal performances by a few of the ladies, the rest of the cast pushing through their respective limits to provide some seriously heated anal solo action. The aforementioned lesbian outing classified as an exception here was smoking hot itself but some of the camera work and editing, while better than Jonni's work at another company, was slightly inconsistent so it merited a rating of Recommended overall. In short, Open Ended was a lot of fun for female solo acts involving anal and while some of you might complain about the lack of peckers used by the women, the size of the toys involved was far greater than anyone currently working in porn so check it out if interested.
