Extras: The first disc had no extras to speak of, allowing for the bitrate to be slightly higher on the footage displayed. The second disc was where all the extras action was at, the best extra being the 28:58 minutes of Behind the Scenes footage as shot by Tim Von Swine, Mike John, and Erik "white boy" Everhard himself. There was mostly extra sex, a lot of extra nudity, and some interviews; with the women as well as with Jimmy and company all goofing off and fooling around added some value to the feature. Audio/Video Quality: Buttholes & B-Sides was presented in a retro-looking 1.33:1 ratio full frame as shot by director Erik Everhard for Jules Jordan Video in the standard definition MPEG-2 codec with 480i resolution. The lighting was largely even and plentiful so there was not a lot of grain or other visual issues to complain about. The camera angles always favored the women, making them look as good as possible, though usually at the expense of Erik. The camera was steady and the editing kept poor footage at a minimum, but I could see why it was labeled "B-Sides" in terms of performers and technical issues. Jimmy Scaffnetti was the guy at the helm of the camera here, though Mike John and Tim Von Swine were around for part of the production too, all of them seemed to handle the camera angles in a fluid manner. I could fuss about minor matters but the 6.3 Mbps bitrate never appeared to be an issue but in general; it was still a mostly solid looking show. The audio was presented in 2.0 LPCM enhanced English at 1536 Kbps with a 48 kHz sampling rate, with minimal separation between the channels but all the vocals meant to be heard were clearly discernable. There was a lot of thumping music as others use and the sounds of the sexual activity were usually picked up by the built in microphone on the camera. I'm not sure why the switch in audio presentation from earlier releases but other than being louder, it was not clearer or otherwise enhanced on my home theater system. In short, the technical matters were fairly solid all around, maybe not quite as good as any of Erik's other gonzo titles of late but still not as weak as many of his peers.

Body of Review: Erik Everhard is the kind of performer that most women love to work with, his pounding thrusts and decadent willingness to do anything they want to get them off enhancing his stature wherever he goes. As a director, he is known for some of the best gonzo porn available on the market but what about the more marginal efforts he places in his vault when things don't quite go as planned? That is the premise of Buttholes & B-Sides: Special Edition, the double disc set of older scenes showing the cast having a great time, even if the methods used to capture the action did not always work as well as his more polished efforts. In this case, there was a mix of domestically shot scenes, foreign based works, and even a POV scene with his then-girlfriend that led to an internal creampie he felt obligated to explain before it started. The women were not top tier by any means, though Taryn Thomas was looking quite fetching compared to most of her other works of the time. I would have loved to have had a production date for the separate scenes to help "place them" in the timeline of Everhard mythology but as expected, there was a lot of fuck for the buck regardless of the specifics. Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene Two: Taryn Thomas, the lead hotty as seen in flimsy blue lingerie on the lower right hand corner of the cover, was up next and she was definitely the best known lady of the production. Summary: Buttholes & B-Sides by director Erik Everhard for Jules Jordan Video might not have had the usual anamorphic widescreen (as advertised on the company website at this writing), a bunch of hot looking ladies considered to be top tier talent (though Taryn was a major hotty here), or the technical values one associates with an Everhard production, but it did manage to provide enough fuck for the buck strokability and replay value to merit a rating of Recommended. In short, I have seen a lot of Erik's movies in the last ten years and admit that I prefer his more polished efforts but Buttholes & B-Sides: Special Edition did manage to show me even the vaulted scenes that "didn't quite cut it" for previous release were better than some of Erik's peers (at other companies), making my appreciation for his better works all the more likely when I see them in the near future.
