Extras: For me, the best extra was the 7:45 minute long Behind the Scenes feature by Shylar Cobi, a blooper reel, set of interviews, and clips from the production rolled into one. For most other people, the 89:36 minutes worth of unrelated bonus scenes will be the best extras, the five edited scenes from Faithless, Flashback, Going Deep, Strictly Conversation, and Suck It. There was also a biography for Meggan Mallone, a photogallery, some trailers, and spam at the front of the DVD but that was it.

Audio/Video Quality: Meggan Does Malibu was presented in the same 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color it was shot in by director Paul Thomas for Vivid Entertainment using the standard definition MPEG-2 codec in 480p resolution for the SD version. While not his most visually stunning work of late (this was shot in 2008), it had an edgy and gritty look to it that sort of worked in some ways for the thematic material here, though some technical polishing up probably kept it in the vaults for a lot longer than usual, editor Manny Casino handling those chores well enough. The composition of the camera angles was fairly optimal this time, the director balancing his usual dedication to plot over sex with the strokable aspects this time. The fleshtones were generally accurate though but the DVD mastering was well done (if only in a bitrate hovering around 3.4 Mbps in SD, making it a mixed bag in terms of visual quality; leaning towards average at best. There was also a company watermark that I wasn't too keen on but most of the camera work seemed to keep this in mind, keeping the majority of action far away from the lower right hand corner. The audio was presented in a 2.0 Dolby Digital English (in 192 Kbps with a 48 kHz sampling rate) offering with the vocals sounding flat and the music pretty decent. For some reason, the levels were definitely on the low side, the dynamic range was average and the separation of the vocal track nonexistent.

Body of Review: Vivid Entertainment has seen more profitable years in recent times but there is no denying their product has been better than ever when it comes to satisfying consumer requests of late. Much of that has to do with their attempts to mine the gonzo market courtesy of their newer directors but even stalwart Paul Thomas has been trying to up his game in this regard. One way to know if a movie of his is considered (by the company) to be first rate is if it credits him under this name rather than his alias of "Chuck Lords" so I was a bit puzzled when I reviewed Meggan Does Malibu this week, the credits listing him as Check but the cover claiming his Paul Thomas alias; the bipolar attitude somewhat noticeable in the way the movie was put together as well. It featured young Houston hotty Meggan Mallone in a starring role alongside Gianna Lynn, the two playing lifelong friends enjoying a series of sexual adventures before settling down. The company website described the movie like this: "Meggan and her best friend are on their last fling to California from their home town in Ohio. It's their last chance for fun before settling down in the heartland. They meet an adventurous, romantic Bohemian artist, a California original, and with her comes a host of sexy seaside men... and suddenly all the old rules seem not to apply. Adult's most awarded director, Paul Thomas, brings together Malibu, Meggan, threeways and facials, in a sand, sun and sex spectacular, Meggan Does Malibu. It's a tale told as only Paul Thomas can, from the people who do sex and story best... Vivid." Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene One: Meggan Mallone, the attractive brunette featured on the front cover, was up first as she made out with Rocco Reed in the cabin of his boat, for some reason moving to a home in a secluded part of the hills (more PT logic I suspect). Trent then manhandles Holly without any permission, tearing off her clothing in a near rape on the sofa. The lack of chemistry aside, the technical matters prevented any chemistry from developing and the plotted portion seemed more tacked on than usual so I rated it as a Rent It. Obviously, I can see why the credits listed this as a "Chuck Lords" feature but why change the cover to use Paul's more prominent name when it was clearly one of the company's small projects associated with his toss-away alias? In short, Meggan Does Malibu started out as a showcase adventure for Meggan Mallone and Gianna Lynn with some potential, barely scrapping up enough strokability to merit checking it out except for some of the better unrelated bonus scenes.
