Extras: For many of you, the 32:06 minute long bonus scene from Gritty starring Mallory Rae Murphy and Scott Nails, will be the best extra. I described it in detail below, my preference regarding extras is that those specific to a particular movie are more important than bonus scenes like this. There was a 12:07 minute long Behind the Scenes feature by Mike Maravich, some trailers, a photogallery, and spam filling out the extras here and yes, there were position menu breakdowns on the chapter menu).

Audio/Video Quality: Sex Crimes was presented in a 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color it was shot in by director B. Skow for Vivid using the standard definition MPEG-2 codec in 480 resolution for this DVD. The flick was shot in 1080i/60 high definition awhile back, though presented in the SD format in a short feature playing off his skills best. The lighting was well handled and this added to the pleasure of watching the gals in play as the lengthy scenes gave them enough freedom to explore their sexuality. The composition of the camera angles was almost always optimal this time, Skow seeing fit to try and enhance the look of the ladies at every turn as possible, the minor grain not bothering me nearly as much as it could have in less capable hands. The fleshtones were accurate too and the DVD mastering was well done (the bitrate hovering around 4.2 Mbps), even if the lighting was off at times (the company watermark will be bothersome to some out there but only some given its location). At times there appeared to be multiple cameras used on some scenes, the equipment not matched up so the edits were more readily apparent, a soft haze included at times that I could not quite explain. The audio was presented in a 2.0 Dolby Digital English (in 256 Kbps with a 48 kHz sampling rate) offering with the vocals sounding flat and the music pretty decent. The aural qualities of the movie appeared to offer some separation and increased dynamic range, the vocals easily heard in most cases and mixed in with the ambient noises as well as music but some scenes were not as well handled in this regard as others for those paying attention.

Body of Review: B. Skow assumed the role of lead director at Vivid awhile back, the company history of evolving to meet the needs of the consumer such that it was long ready for such a change. Skow is best known for his "Brand New Faces" series that introduces newcomers into the industry but even on his features, he allows significantly longer sex scenes to unfold rather than the sub-8 minute trysts the company used to provide. His latest feature is a drama called Sex Crimes, the title referring to a murder investigation in the porn industry by a squad of hardened detectives, the group working under the assumption that they have only 36 hours to solve the case before the leads go cold. The dramatic elements were capably handled but it is the sex that will bring you back for more, the show starring Mallory Rae Murphy in what has been advertised as her first leading role at the company. The back cover described the movie like this: "All hard-boiled Sgt. Mallory Rae Murphy wants is a cup of coffee and a good night's sleep, but she gets more than that when a gruesome execution-style killing rocks LA's Porn Valley. Sgt. Murphy and her crack squad of cops have 36 hours to infiltrate LA's infamous porn scene and discover the shocking facts that ended an innocent life. After a searing anal, an aggressive interracial and Monique's nasty fucking, Murphy quickly learns that the horny are different than you and I." Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

There were numerous rough edges in need of polishing up and the choice of lead with Mallory Rae Murphy was a bit of a surprise, but she handled her acting chores nearly as well as her sexual encounters, showing some potential in the genre of feature smut. In short, Sex Crimes might not stand out compared to some of Skow's very best works to date but it was certainly entertaining, the light manner taken on the parody angle setting it aside from the large pack of competitors trying to copy one another so brazenly these days.
