Let me start at the beginning. Based on the marketing hype that accompanied the movie and is provided on adultdvdempire.com, I chose to review The Houseguest for several reasons: 1) the movie appears to be a feature; 2) it includes Kimberly Kane, who is a recipient of one of my 2007 Dr. Jay's Must See Girls awards (Click here); and 3) one of the performers is Kate Frost, a insatiable girl I met on my very first visit to a porn set several years ago. To be fair, I enjoyed Kimberly's and Kate's performances. On the other hand, the marketing hype, which makes The Houseguest sound like a feature, is certainly not truth in advertising.

Here's an exact quote from adultdvdempire.com's website: "Tom Byron lives by himself in the Hollywood Hills. He has a nice big house but it gets lonely sometimes. So he frequently has houseguests. And since he's in porn, that part's never lonely...because his houseguests never stop fucking. After several weeks of voyeurism, he decides to take a break and go it alone...until Stefani--who's not in porn--comes to town. (By the way, please do not hold me accountable for the numerous grammatical errors in the above quote. It's a quote, after all!)

Doesn't The Houseguest sound like a feature to you? Wouldn't you expect there to be dialog? Wouldn't you expect non-sexual interaction between the characters? Wouldn't you expect plot?

Surprise! There's no plot whatsoever. There's no dialog! This is a wall-to-wall all-sex movie masquerading as a feature. It's deplorable.

Although actor Tom Byron gives a brief organizing soliloquy at the beginning of the movie, after watching the movie...not once, but twice...I still don't know who the houseguest is (the marketing hype identifies her as Stefani Morgan). Stefani never asks to crash at Tom's house, Tom never reluctantly agrees...and so forth. Tom does have cameo roles in two of the scenes...in Scene One, he "presents" Stefani Morgan to Tommy Gunn and, in Scene Four, he hands Kate Frost a container of water while she's fucking Jerry. Other than that, Tom is not obviously shown as the homeowner, the performers are not introduced as his guests, and he certainly doesn't play a voyeur. Bottom line, it's my best guess that somebody shot five sex scenes and then tried to figure out a theme that would tie them together. Then, I assume that the above box-cover hype was written and Tom Byron engaged to speak the opening monologue in an effort to, in the words of a porn editor who is my friend, "frost a turd."

Please do not misunderstand...I have no issue with the gorgeous female case members, their able guys, or their sexual encounters. The sex is definitely mild and, with the notable exception of the girl/girl scene, the girls don't cum during the scenes. It is, therefore, what is euphemistically called "couples fare." So, I don't object to the sex because it is neither particularly good nor particularly bad.

I do, however, have problems with an all-sex movie being marketed as a feature. In addition, I have issues with the incredibly inept videography (see the DVD Perspectives below).

It's a good thing that we here at adultdvdreviews.com don't evaluate the "plot" in porn flicks. This movie would receive a -5! We do, however, evaluate the video...and that, to be kind, sucks.

My advice to you is simple...unless you're a major fan of one of the girls in this movie and are trying consciously to collect all of her movies, remember Benjamin Franklin's words and don't invite this houseguest into your home.

Scene One

Scene One is a conventional boy/girl scene featuring Stefani Morgan, a cute, curly-haired, all-natural-looking blond, and superstud Tommy Gunn. Video (technical): I think a kindergartner with a consumer level conventional 4:3 camcorder could have done as good a job! The lighting is either insufficient or too bright (sometime within the same frame), the camera motions are extremely erratic and jerky, and the color balance is off (people should never be orange!). I also noticed a great deal of pixelization (graininess) in Scenes Two, Three, and Four. And, there are instances in which flare spots cover the image. On the positive side, I must admit that there are numerous excellent close-ups. And, the editing, while choppy, does not impair the sense of continuity during the scenes. Below average...two stars.

Audio (technical): The audio is average to mediocre. I don't think a boom microphone was used because Tom Byron's opening monologue is quite hard to hear. Whenever the camera gets close to the action, the volume level increases. Similarly, the volume decreases when the camera moves away. There is a musical soundtrack that accompanies the sex. Its volume is consistent, but seldom overpowers the sounds of the on-screen sex. Average...three stars.

Extras: In addition to a full-motion chapter selector, The Houseguest boasts a "positions room" you can use to watch blowjobs, missionary, doggie, and so forth; five bonus scenes (from Babylon, Kiss Me Stupid, Lay Me Down, Star and Zoom); Stefani Morgan's biography; two very effective slide shows (one just for Stefani Morgan and the other for The Houseguest); phone sex ads, ads for Vivid sex toys and other products; trailers; and website information. I'm surprised that there aren't more movie-specific Extras...like behind the scenes or director's commentary. Again, this movie isn't a feature--even though it is marketed as such--and doesn't have the complete set of "bells and whistles" a feature would normally have. Three and one-half stars.

Aesthetics: The Houseguest was shot in one or more very nice locations that are decorated with attractive furnishings. I like how the sex was filmed on beds, staircases, in front of a fireplace, and so on. I'm pleased that the director didn't choose the ubiquitous "let's fuck on the couch" syndrome for all the scenes. In addition, there was a reasonable amount of effort shown with regard to the girls' makeup and wardrobe. There is a musical soundtrack that accompanies the scenes. However, it is not particularly noteworthy and does not seem to have been written--or edited--for the movie. For example, the music does not climax when the performers cum. And, the "song" sometimes changes during a scene. So, even though the music is enjoyable, it doesn't particularly support the one-screen action. Four stars.
