Audio/Video Quality: Overnight was presented in a 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color it was shot in by director B. Skow for Vivid Entertainment using the standard definition MPEG-2 codec in 480 resolution for this DVD. The composition of the camera angles was almost always optimal this time, Skow seeing fit to try and enhance the look of the ladies at every turn as possible, the minor grain not bothering me nearly as much as it could have in less capable hands. The fleshtones were usually accurate too and the DVD mastering was well done (the bitrate hovering around 4.0 Mbps), even if the lighting was off at times (the company watermark will be bothersome to some out there but only some given its location). At times there appeared to be multiple cameras used on some scenes, the equipment not matched up so the edits were more readily apparent, a soft haze included at times that I could not quite explain. The audio was presented in a 2.0 Dolby Digital English (in 256 Kbps with a 48 kHz sampling rate) offering with the vocals sounding flat and the music pretty decent. The aural qualities of the movie appeared to offer very limited separation and dynamic range, the vocals easily heard in most cases and mixed in with the ambient noises fairly well.

Body of Review: B. Skow and Vivid Entertainment have had quite a run of award winning movies in recent years, his technical expertise elevating well chosen casts to new heights in several cases. Skow’s latest flick worthy of note is called Overnight, a feature showcasing Allie Haze as a hooker wanting more out of life and the man she encounters that just might prove to be exactly what she needs. Given the recent success of Jessie Andrews as a call girl undergoing a change of heart, it makes sense for other feature outlets to use similar themes, those this one being written by the infamous David Stanley certainly gave me the impression that this might be a more textured feature. The back cover described the movie like this: “Lance can't make till morning without night terrors. He's a man with emotional baggage, and his thoughts turn against him from dusk til dawn. Vera's a hooker, and she's fed up with johns, lonely hotel rooms and, well, life in general. Until she gets a call from Lance. He needs someone to sleep next to him and protect him from the night terrors. No sex, just company...at least for now. By the end of the week they're in love. But Vera can't shake the feeling of being used, and Lance can't shake the feeling of Vera. Can two damaged souls find love and repair and a happily ever after? The secrets of the night, revealed, in this important new feature from Vivid and B. Summary: Overnight by director B. Skow for Vivid Entertainment was a smaller scope project compared to some using the same themes, the sweet ending indicative of the writer’s past efforts (though still entertaining). Sexually, I was left wanting more and the pacing of a few scenes seemed to be wanting yet it was good enough to merit a rating of Recommended based largely on the appeal of Allie Haze alone, some of the elements just not exploited as much as they could have been. Allie was credible enough in the role though too many of the secondary performers phoned in their dialogue and sex scenes, it still provided an alternative worth exploring with a special someone not quite as avidly into porn as a regular consumer of the genre. In short, Overnight was the kind of showcase feature-lite I typically associate with a couple of other companies, even Vivid in their past, so give it a look if you’d like to see something slightly retro in nature.
