The XCritic Interview: Mackenzie Moss

The XCritic Interview, it is all about being one of a kind, showing the publlic things that they never knew existed with the performers and the industry they love. One of the most difficult things to do in this business, is to catch a shooting star before it has a chance to supernova in the heavens above and make its journey across so many places before it settles within our hearts, minds and imaginations. You may think that you know what a starlet goes through when she is making fantasies come to life for your viewing pleasure as a fan, but trust me, you do not. Most starlets who catch fire, their schedule can go from working a nine to five, five days a week, to making movies twenty days a month, spending up to ten plus hours in a make-up chair, in a desolate desert, waiting for the right light to come about. All while having eaten little to nothing in order to do a scene that requires her to push her body the same way that a gymnast would, with one massive difference, she must stay on set to make sure the scene she hired for looks good, no matter how long that takes and she must do it while having an orgasm, not letting her make-up run and blocking out all of the outside world and it's daily challenges. Not an easy thing to do. Mackenzie Moss is the latest "Spiegler Girl." A title that has come to be known for the most dashing women on the planet, who all help create amazing films as well as going above and beyond what most others do in the modeling realm with professionalism. That is a reputation that the company owner has created over many years. I had to find out myself what it takes to become a “Spiegler Girl” and more importantly, who a Spiegler Girl is. With her first five scenes due out within the next thirty to forty days, one thing is for sure, no matter what I was about to discover with this interview, I knew that at a minimum, there was lighting in a bottle with newcomer Mackenzie Moss. The question is, what do you do with such a thing? How do you allow the electricity to flow?

Don Juan: First things first, thank you for letting us be one of the first to showcase you to the adult world and its fans. I normally start interviews off by asking how you found your way into our glorious land of debauchery but, since you are a new starlet just beginning her journey, I want to know everything else first. Tell us, where do you come from, where did you grow up? From first glance, you look like a California girl maybe?

Mackenzie Moss: Oh, no, I am definitely not a California girl. (She snickers so charmingly, as you never call a New Yorker a Californian.) I am hopefully becoming one now. I am originally from upstate New York near that massive lake known as Ontario let’s just say. I am a gal who grew up in one of those beautiful suburbs outside of a massive, beautiful city out there.

Don Juan: Get the fuck out of here woman! I was born and raised in the NYC, Sound View, South Bronx baby! I am a New York boy all the way. May I now say a proper hello to my fellow New Yorker.

Mackenzie Moss: You are from New York?

Don Juan: Yes, I am.

Mackenzie Moss: Niiiiiiiiiiiiice!

Don Juan: I am jealous of you now, because every city boy, he wants to get out of Manhattan and become a country boy. Well, this one did anyway.

Mackenzie Moss: Well, it wasn’t quite country in my neck of the woods up north. It was a short drive to a lot of rural areas. Picture a little quaint suburb. Little houses everywhere that you can see. Some had little picket fences but the houses there are so close to one another it is crazy.

Don Juan: We are talking Stepford Wives and shit? Suburbs where every neighbor knows the other? Then, in some parts of the hood, the elders never come out of their houses and it is just dead silence in the summertime where playgrounds lie empty and unused. (We start laughing massively as we both grew up in a similar place.)

Mackenzie Moss: Well, kind of. So yeah, I wasn’t quite a city girl. The further you go north, as you probably know, the cities up there get smaller and smaller. The ones I grew up outside of were not big at all. Think of a city like Syracuse and then all the surrounding suburbs. That is the kind of “berg” that I came from.

Don Juan: So, does this mean that there is a possibility that you may be the first ever beautiful woman who actually likes cold weather? (As I am saying this, she is with a lot of grumble in her voice starting to say, nooooooooo.)

Mackenzie Moss: That is hilarious, I am not.

Don Juan: Damn! Did you know, there is no such thing as a beautiful woman who likes cold weather.

Mackenzie Moss: I feel like because I have lived in it so long that I just got so sick of it you know? I will say this Don; I can tolerate it with a smile on my face. I will stay in it if I must, but I am not going to like it.

(She has this subtle humor that only the most educated people have. Yes, some call us nerds but think of talking to a scientist, that is the first impression I got from Mackenzie, her laughs and her humor.)

Don Juan: No, I feel you. Being that I live in Colorado I have gained an appreciation for normal weather, like cold during the winter season.

Here in Colorado, it can be sunny, raining, and snowing, all on the same day. Whereas in New York, when it snows, your ass better be by the fire.

So, how are you enjoying the move out to California, is it everything that you expected it to be? I take it you are loving the brutal heat, the water shortages and sunshine.

Mackenzie Moss:

(She laughs the cutest laugh.)

Well, So I moved here the Wednesday during AVN week and then flew out to AVN the next day after everything got moved in. I was at AVN for a couple of days and then as I am boarding my flight, getting ready for this California sunshine, I arrive back and it had been raining and raining and raining. Then continued to rain and rain and rain.

It is so crazy, everyone told me about how much I was going to love the warm weather, but it has been so cold up until a few days ago here, you know? It has barely started to get up into the upper seventies and eighties here. So, I feel like I brought the cold, the precipitation, with me to LA. I have not experienced too many sunny days yet, I have not gone to the beach or anything like that, so…….

Don Juan: Oh my God! No!

Mackenzie Moss: I have been to Venice once, I had visited LA a handful of times before I moved out here, so I was at least a little familiar, but upon my arrival until now, no, I have not seen a lot of warm weather.

Don Juan: So, you are saying now that you are a resident, things have not gone your way as far as warm weather goes? You haven't gotten to fully indulge yet?

Mackenzie Moss: No, not really. It has been all rainy. That was something I did not expect.

Don Juan: Oh, my goodness, you have no idea how rare it is that it rains the way it has been raining in Los Angeles as of late.

Mackenzie Moss: I know, that is what everyone keeps telling me. It has been raining for weeks!

Don Juan: When I was a young whipper-snapper, I moved to North Hollywood and it never rained for two years. (We laugh.) OK, maybe a bit of an exaggeration but I honestly have a hard time remembering rain.

Mackenzie Moss: That is so funny to me. I guess it is something that is really good for California right now. The hills are so green and whatnot, which that is always a good no matter what state you live in, especially after all of the fires that this state faced. There is still that part of me that is anxiously awaiting the beach weather.

Don Juan: I feel ya, you want that freakin’ beach weather. Then you can head to Long Beach and see all those beautiful coastal cities. There is nothing else like that in California. If you have never been to San Diego before, you must go. It is an amazing city for a warm weather lover. Well, I wanted to tell you, we were going to get to meet because you were shooting with the amazing Morbid Thoughts. A friend of mine who I love to pieces and want to squeeze to death every six seconds. I think that being you are a Spiegler Girl, you have this amazing reputation already for being kind and professional, I think this is going to be an amazing adventure for you.

Mackenzie Moss: Why thank you so much, Don. I had so much fun shooting for Morbid during AVN. He is so professional.

Don Juan: Ugh, isn’t he adorable too. I truly do love that man.He makes things look so easy. He always tells me, "Don, it is the strobe," or this or that and I say, "no damn it, it is you!"

Mackenzie Moss: Yes, he really is. It is now two months that I have been in the industry and it seems like just s few days. That was one of my first shoots and it was a very wonderful experience. I see why you love Morbid the way you do. I was nervous and the way that he told me what he wanted and how we would get there, I just can't say enough good things about him.

Don Juan: Indeed! So, to start off the industry questions, I would love to hear Mackenzie Moss’ story of discovery. How did you come upon the adult world of film?

Mackenzie Moss: OK, so the first thing you must know about me, I research things. The industry had always been intriguing to me and for about a year, I really sat down and analyzed everything that I could about the business. I had spent more than a few months just looking at Mark Spiegler and seeing his great track record with models, films and everything in between. What I will also say, there were a few performers who caught my eye, there were a few websites whose pages I jumped on and I talked among the fans seeing what was what. I also was lucky to have a few acquaintances in the adult industry, so I knew some things that most people who are starting up do not. They also gave me some insight into some of the reputations of companies and people already within the business and that once again pointed me to the direction of Mark Spiegler. It was not until I really started to look at things on my own and got serious about this for myself, that I saw that he is truly the best agent in the world within the adult industry. Then I saw the performers that came from his roster, they are just so admirable to me. When you see names like Carter Cruise, Sasha Grey, you see the potential of what a “porn star” can be. I thought they were not only cool, but they were women who spoke a message of success, of new ideas, of confidence, all from what they accomplished in the industry. It was from there Don, that this certain admiration began to form within me and that is when I knew I wanted to make the jump to becoming part of the adult industry.

You know, I really must tell the fans this Don. When you see these strong women sending out this message of empowerment and their constant struggle to be heard, that is something that you have to really give them their just do on. With the stigma of the industry, most people think that such strong women would not exist but these women, to me they have transcended that stigma and that is what inspired me to aspire to become apart of this business. To me, it is admirable beyond anything I can think of, how open they are to the world and how it inspires so many others and that is exactly what made me say that I want to be that type of person. I want to be that performer that inspires people to believe in themselves, to not care what other people think, not just in porn but in all walks of their life.

Don Juan: So, what was it like getting to talk with Mark about making the jump into the industry? I can imagine that you and he spoke at length of such things.

Mackenzie Moss: Yes, he and I spoke in length about these kinds of things. Even when we were just e-mailing back and forth, I was not one hundred percent sure this was what I wanted to do. I wanted to hear what he had to say in reaction to my views. I did not have it in my head that while I was talking to him that instantly I was going to get to be a “Spiegler Girl.” There is a lot that goes into place with that. So much discussion and a lot of effort just to find out if you are a good fit for one another. I wonder if fans even know the beginning of how much effort Mark and his models put into just talking about what could be.

Don Juan: What is that experience like to start out that journey to working with Mark and becoming a “Spiegler Girl” in your eyes?

Mackenzie Moss: Well, what ended up happening, our conversations led to me flying out there on my own dime. I met Mark at his house, and we spoke in detail about why I wanted to be in this industry. He tried to convince me why I should not do this for a living. That was something I will never forget. He told me that is what he does with all his girls, he tries to talk you out of it. At about that time, I was really feeling this confidence take over me. It was coming from a lot of the changes in my own life but also the pursuit of life in this industry. I told that to Mark, that I have a new found confidence and I wanted to use it, take advantage of the time, whatever you wish to call it. I think it was then we both really met eye to eye, and he saw where I was coming from and I saw where he was. Mark then tells me, “well, all you have to do is move out here now and we can get started. That was the most shocking part and has been ever since, the speed to which the industry moves. The pace is amazing. I planned everything out so that I would be getting here by February. I had this cute little place picked out and ready to go. I flew with my cat out here from directly from New York City as I had been living there before I decided to take this leap. My first scene was January 29^th, so planning things out to begin after AVN was massive. Since then, I have done probably around thirty scenes.

Don Juan: Wow, that is exciting. You are at that stage where you get to see all these creations slowly get produced after production. I can only imagine how that feels for the first time, especially with a new starlet in this grand industry.

Mackenzie Moss: Yes, exactly! I think I have a few out right now, I think the count is around six or seven.

Don Juan: Now, you have a massive one coming out with Girlsway.com and I know that the fans and a lot of industry people are very excited to see this vignette for so many reasons. The thing that I think is really getting so many people charged up in the best way, is that this is Casey Calvert and Eli Cross coming together as directors for the first time with that amazing company. How lucky are you to have that be your film debut with that company? I am jelly. I love Casey Calvert, one of the best people in this industry.

Mackenzie Moss: Yes, she is really sweet. I like her a lot and I really enjoyed getting to work with her for that scene.

Don Juan: The thing that I think makes Casey so amazing and I have had many people tell me this, is how she is able to make everyone feel right at home no matter their talent level, no matter their strength. That is a true director and artist. I have been dying to see her get behind the camera like this for a long time. I will always have a deep respect for her because of all that.

Mackenzie Moss: Yeah, she sure is.

Don Juan: You know, before we get into the Girlsway scene, I must step back and say how much I admire that story about Mark and your research. I am flabbergasted in the best way. I have seen many performers in this business succeed and you are off to such a great start with all you are doing. Keep it up dude!

Mackenzie Moss: Well, this was a very important life decision. I think you must put that kind of thought into all big choices that are life changing and I do. I have always been that way no matter what it is I am getting into. I am big on researching everything. Reading is massive in my life. Having a college degree is something that I am very proud to say, that I achieved for myself and I did it the exact same way as my discovery of the adult industry. Having a degree in biology, from a school that I dreamed of going to on the East Coast, that was so special to me. It was four and a half years of a lot of joy. I was getting into veterinary school and when you do not come from a wealthy upbringing, student debt can move things in a different direction I will say. I love animals and after completing my undergraduates envisioning myself at veterinary school was looking so steep in the pocketbook that I do not know if I could be happy, even though I love animals so much.

I love that market though and it is not just the animals, it is a very competitive industry. Add in that fact that veterinarians do not get paid as much as medical doctors do, so I just knew that the situation would have been super stressful for me and that is so much to take in after you just spent all this time, all this energy and all this money achieving one goal. It was right there that I decided that I did not want to be in school for the rest of my twenties. Starting a career at thirty is something I do not think enough people truly give a hard look at what the demand asks of you and most importantly, takes out of you. For me, I had to do some traveling, I had to see the world. Looking at things the way that I did, that is when I realized this is the time that I should be taking the riskiest ventures in life. This is when you can do such things in life. I think the combination of happiness, adventure, and my age really are what made me say, “yes, I will do it!”

Don Juan: Wow, that is pure poetry. I think most do not understand that is what life is. Calculated risks and decisions are what give the earth color and make the seasons be the times of wonder they are to the people who throw caution to the wind like you did. Time is always fleeting in our lives. Once I got past twenty-six, the only thing I said every single day was that I wished there was more time. The older you get; the faster the time goes. I am a fellow college grad, I went to school to work in museums at William and  Mary, wahoo! Now, here I am a writer all these years later. Not many people ever get to discover who it is they are in terms of career and love in a combination. That is a rare thing. Having those options, being able to make those decisions, that is special. You know, a lesson I learned at twenty-five when I really began to make money was that no matter where you go, what you do, debt will always be there in some form seen or not. Having fun, doing what you enjoy and love, that is what truly matters in the long run. Dude, that is so fucking cool that you are a scientist! That is what I originally wanted to be many years ago. I really love seeing that there is now another scientist in the industry. Too fucking cool!

Now, here is the first big industry question I want to ask, and I think it is so perfect for this interview. So, Bree, Gamma, Girlsway, they are a company that is really changing things in so many ways in this business. So, your newly released scene looks so badass. I mean there is a lot that was put into this thing, I can tell just by the promo stills. You are one of the first models to play a character in a Casey Calvert and Eli Cross creation.

Mackenzie Moss: Oh, yes, that is true!

Don Juan: Yes, that is something very special. Can you tell us, what was that day like? What was it like to be on set with them? What are they like as artists and directors? How did Mackenzie Moss take all of that in?

Mackenzie Moss: Yes, I would love to. So, the first thing that was so amazing, I show up on the Girlsway set and everything looked so beautiful and art like. When I had begun working with Mark, we went around and we met a lot of people within the companies of the adult world, so I was familiar with the people that I was working with. A lot of these people were not industry personnel I was just meeting for the first time. This was my first ever scene with Girlsway and I was excited, Don. I mean, I was very excited. Your first ever Girlsway.com scene is a big deal in this business. There is also this nervousness because I really wanted to make a great impression. When I got to set, there were two make-up artists and there were technically four of us because it was me, Alina Lopez, Kenzie Reeves for the sex scene but London River was there for a non-sex role. So, we get our make-up done and that was a great experience. Then, I got to meet Moe and he took me upstairs for my solo, pretty girl’s pictures.

Photos that were just me so that I could get my profile created on the Girlsway website. He was just super nice to me and an amazing person to work with for something like that before our scene. So, as I was cast for this vignette, I had gotten a call before from Mark, letting me know that I was going to be a part of this scene the night before. I got to look at the script and I spent a bit of time trying to get things down the way that I wished to present with this character. The night before was fun trying to get things the way that I like them. Alina and Kenzie, they were so easy going, they really made it so easy for me to be a part of this energetic and sexy scene. The way that they allowed me to bounce things off them, it let us be able to really do so much with one another, I think. When it got down to the actual sex scene, that back and forth created such wonderful chemistry with one another. I think it showed big time on screen. Our chemistry truly came out in this one. The thing that chemistry gave us, was that the script only called for one of us to squirt and Kenzie, my goodness, she is just amazing and beat us to it. Kenzie is such a great performer. Alina and I, we were able to join in a little bit later but it was fun to be apart of that impromptu style performance.

Don Juan: I love Kenzie Reeves; she is just amazing. Wonderful talent in this business. You know, I love how they did cast you three to do this scene together. Little Kenzie-Poo, she is my home slice, got to work with her twice this last year and she is just a doll!

Mackenzie Moss: Oh my God, she is so adorable too!

Don Juan: Yes! Now Alina, I have never gotten to meet or speak with her yet but she is just a performer beyond words to me. I have had so many people in this business tell me what an amazing person she is. She posted this fucking video where she is playing acoustic guitar, it was like some MTV Unplugged shit from back in the day, that is how talented that woman is. She is an actor, a musician, a model! I am like, “holy shit!” I know what it takes to create that type of kink that you guys did, and I can only imagine what you guys did to make something so alluring come out of that type of sexual fantasy.

Mackenzie Moss: (She laughs, as most fans do not know, squirting is a scene that takes a lot of true production in order to create.) Yes, we truly had to put in a lot of extra everything being that it turned into a scene where all of us where squirting. That is what I will really remember about working with those ladies. We made things go in ways that could only work if we did things together and for each other.

Don Juan: I do not think fans will ever know how much goes into that ultra-sexy style scene. That is a scene where I know that a gal is just so tired from after performing. All you want to do is come home, crash, have someone pamper you. That is what a truly great production always does. It makes things so much easier on a performer when you have that ease and peace that only comes from great sexual chemistry. Kenzie is such a brain when it comes to that side of a performance and production. The scene shows it.

Mackenzie Moss: Alina does too. She is someone who is great in every area you just described like Kenzie and what I took from both of them was how helpful they were to me and when you are working with people who let you speak your mind, talk about your ideas, there is nothing better than that in this business. I really hope the fans love the scene, because I just had the most amazing experience getting to make it and take part in such a production. I looked forward to Girlsway since day one and it was everything and more then I ever dreamed of.

It is there we must leave with some mystery for part two. Seeing the world through the eyes of a starlet on the rise, a woman who is beginning an adventure in life that she not only earned but that she wanted for quite some time, is once in a lifetime for a writer to be able to showcase. The thing I hope every fan takes away from this interview, is knowledge that the ladies of this industry have the same passion that you do for cinema, life and success. For all the people who never take time to see the true magic of the business, you will miss seeing the story this woman has just told the world. This is not the tale of a girl entering a chaotic world of forced anything, no Mackenzie shows the world a view of this business I have been trying to showcase for many years. That this industry contains women who know what they are doing, where they are going and most importantly, are not treading water blindly. No, quite the opposite. These are entertainers, who are investing in their own happiness and even more so, their future that not only includes something financially but something that completes them as a whole, as a human being. This scientist, turned adult actor and model shows that she pursued both passions with the same diligence and the same love. The fact that she decided to make this business her first place of work outside of college shows that this is truly a profession. A place where people do have ambitions to be a part of and those ambitions are not bad, they are more so something that helps them to begin a journey that we all do, one that shows them who they truly are and they deserve all the respect in the world for doing so.
