XCritic Interview: April O’Neil

1. April, how did you get inspired to join the adult industry?

I was inspired to join the industry by the gorgeous women I could have sex with. Seriously, it's very awesome and I'm so incredibly lucky!

2. During your time as an adult model, you've done countless films. Were there any films you did that really stood out as favorites? What about certain types of scenes you really loved performing?

All the parodies I've gotten to do so far have been favorites! They've been the most fun and an unexpected way to live out some personal fantasies. I've also been quite grateful to have the resources to try new things I never thought I could try before!

3. When did you realize you wanted to direct?

I had done some producing for WoodRocket when we made Doctor Whore and Fap To The Future and really fell in love with being behind the scenes and kind of bringing these stories to life. So when they gave me the opportunity to direct the Archie parody, a threesome I'd wanted to make happen since I can even remember, I really, REALLY fell in love with the process and the storytelling aspect of directing.

4. Directing is definitely a different experience than acting. What were some of the most surprising things you noticed about porn as a director?

The way the whole thing is going to be edited later is something that constantly needs to be thought about. When you're acting, you're kind of just doing what you're told and don't really think about the fact that you've said the same line 5 times. But directing, you know why you need that same line 5 times and from 3 different angles.

5. Tell me about how you've learned to direct. Did you ask for outside help, or just let experience guide you?

Lee Roy Myers taught me pretty much everything I know. I'm lucky enough to have paid attention often during my years of being in front of the camera but he really gave me the opportunities to try things behind the camera. He was always willing to answer any questions I had, teach me everything he knows and gave me the chance to try. I'm incredibly grateful to him for believing in me.

6. Are there any directors you really look up to?

Lee Roy Myers, of course. I was a huge fan of his parodies before I ever even met him. I also greatly admire Bree Mills, she's so extremely passionate about her work and it shows through in her movies. I'm also a big fan of Kayden Kross's recent works.

7. As a comic book fan (TMNT), I know you love a great story. What kinds of plots do you see your movies having? Are there any things you really focus on, such as dialogue or scenario?

I suppose it depends on the style of what I'm shooting. With the parodies, I tend to go more for humor, dialogue, and ways to show off the costumes. With anything else, I try to get more interesting shots, visually appealing aspects that convey a certain tone or mood.

8. Who's your favorite Ninja Turtle?

Michelangelo. Love a funny guy!

9. In the future, would you be interested in doing comic-related porn films?

Always. If it falls into comic, sci-fi, supernatural, I'm very into it.

10. What actors and actresses are you excited about working with as you direct?

There are so many brilliant people in our industry currently and honestly, I'm thrilled to have any of them.

11. Do you have any teasers about upcoming films?

I genuinely never know what I'm allowed to tease or say about upcoming projects, ha!

12. Were there any people who seriously helped you through your porn career journey? Tell me about them.

Lee Roy Myers, as I mentioned earlier. He taught me everything I know and gave me the opportunity to direct. And because of that, Bree saw what I was capable of and gave me another opportunity. Honestly, directing wasn't something I was striving to do but these two people gave me a chance and helped me realize something I absolutely love. I'm very grateful to them.
