The Movie:

Janine was a ‘Vivid Girl’ for years but all good things must come to an end and she apparently decided that it was time for her to wave goodbye to the house that Jenna built and move on. Pipe Dreams, from house director Paul Thomas, was her last feature for the world’s most recognizable porno brand, and for some reason it sat on a shelf for a while. For whatever reason, they’ve seen fit to release it now, but will she go out with a bang or with a whimper? Honestly? A little bit of both. Here’s the play by play, fuck by fuck, with a few comments to give you a taste…

Janine plays a rather unhinged porno star who falls in love with one of her co-workers, a former plumber cum director played by Manuel Ferrara. Of course, neither are who they seem and Thomas pulls out a few interesting twists and turns to keep us on our toes between sex scenes. Speaking of which, hey look! Sex scenes!

Chapter 1 – Melissa Lauren And Jerry: Melissa starts this scene off solo, on the couch with her toy. She pleasures herself while Jerry strokes himself off until it’s hummer time. After she gobbles his dong, he spanks her and fingers her ass. She spreads her legs and he bangs her box, and then from there he fucks her in the ass from a few different angles before pulling out and (after taking the rubber off) blowing a big wad into her mouth. Thomas has obviously gone for a more artistic look this time around rather than the ‘lights shining on the action zone’ style typical of mainstream pornography. The results might irk some. There are some very dark scenes here and there are moments where the action is all but obscured. That said, these are the exception and not the rule and while much of the film is darker than your average porno film, the cinematography is solid and the compositions are slick. The transfer itself is all over the place. There are noticeable compression artifacts present and some video noise here and there but for the most part, Pipe Dreams is perfectly watchable even if it probably should have looked better considering how recent it is and that Vivid bankrolled the damn thing.

Sound:

The English language Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track is pretty solid. The levels are well balanced save for a few noticeable exceptions where the music is slightly louder than the dialogue or the on set moaning and groaning. Again, this is an intermittent issue and not the norm. No problems with hiss or distortion and during the more dialogue heavy scenes, things sound fine. You won’t have any problems understanding the parts that matter here.

Extras:

The most substantial supplement on the DVD is a behind the scenes segment that runs just over eight minutes in length. Look for some alternate angles for the sex scenes from the feature as well as some behind the scenes footage but it’s far too brief to really go into too much detail.

Aside from that, Vivid has supplied five bonus scenes, all of which are from older catalogue titles (or at least they look like they are) and none of which have anything to do with Pipe Dreams itself. That said, if you want some bonus wank footage, it certainly fits the bill nicely as long as you go for the Vivid girl look. A still gallery, some trailers for other Vivid DVD releases, text biographies for the key cast members, animated menus and scene selection round out the supplements.

Final Thoughts:

Janine’s wave good by to the Vivid stable is a decent but far from perfect effort. Thomas goes a little too ‘lo-fi’ in the lighting department for some scenes and the picture does suffer for it. That said, Janine and the rest of her female co-stars look good and perform like it was their last day on earth. The extras are fairly standard as is the audio and video quality but fans of the girls in the film can consider Pipe Dreams, even if Justine Joli (swoon!) should have had more screen time.
