Extras: The best extra was the 9:55 minute long Behind the Scenes feature shot by Jamal Johnson and edited by Evul Atheng. There were some pop up videos and special effects, little bits of nudity and sex included for those who care. Jamal added some fun too but it was decidedly lightweight compared to the better efforts of Nick P. (Stoya's interview suggesting her sheltered life might be responsible for recent behaviors). There were also 8 trailers, a slide show and a photogallery; not much but what I expected overall.

Audio/Video Quality: A Taste of Stoya was presented in the usual 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen as shot by director Robby D. for Digital Playground. The standard definition version was in 480 resolution with Stoya's scenes looking particularly sharp and crisp. She photographs well and the limited amount of post production wizardry (as well as filters and other camera tricks) made her look just as sexy as ever (especially compared to some of the more arty-farty shows the company offers up at times). The video bitrate hovered around the 5.3 Mbps bitrate when I spot checked it though it ranged higher occasionally as well, no compression artifacts observed in my viewing of the upcoming flick. I predict that the Blu-ray version will look even better but make no mistakes that aside from a few comments below, this was one decent looking bit of boning (to use the vernacular), with often skilful editing by Joey Pulgadas. The audio was presented in the usual 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround English with a 384 Kbps bitrate. The audio was very solid here with the music balanced in better than expected even if the separation appeared to be added in during post production (and the dynamic range was modest to say the best). Joey Pulgadas did a fine job cleaning up some of the issues inherent in any porn production though, even the background noises and talking handled very well here.

Body of Review: Robby D. has finally won the widespread acceptance in porn for his directing efforts at Digital Playground but aside from his handful of bigger releases each year, few people I know seem to be acquainted with his work. That's a shame because he often does such a fine job of conveying the sexual heat and energy of his performers that I think said friends are missing out on some of his best work. Next month will see some scenes that qualify as smoking hot too in a performer featured set of all sex scenes called A Taste of Stoya, obviously displaying the raven haired beauty from a time when she was still under contract. Stoya was in two of the scenes here, 40% of those in the movie for those mathematically inclined, and I can't deny she looked pretty good here in her work with studly Mick Blue and award winner James Deen. The other scenes were pretty decent too, held back not by the lack of circus act sex so much as a generic set of pairings that just weren't up to the best the company has to offer in my opinion. Still, the footage of Stoya alone should appeal to her slavering fan boys and newfound aficionados that follow her exploits with the mighty lame Marilyn Manson, her return to the spotlight of adult work perhaps just one shove away when he tires of her. Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene One: Bridgette B., a curvy blond with lots of tattoos, was up first showering during the opening credits, the young lady inquiring in that insecure manner women like to put men through, this time with Mick Blue. She finished up with some lotion and returned to bed with the guy, his denials fueling her line of questioning until he hit upon the right answer; Bridgette rewarding him with a kiss. The scene was shot in an almost amateurish manner too, the edit-heavy production seeming to cover for something at the beginning. That said, Stoya went to working on his dick in her mouth as she appeared happy to do, her ribcage poking out a bit too much but her form as flexible as ever (see my screen capture). Mick chowed down on her snatch and she moaned on cue, the way she looked at him convincing me she had at least a little personal chemistry for the guy doing such a fine job going down on her. Her eye contact aside, she appeared to have an elevated respiration rate too, her neatly trimmed bush looking quite unlike recent reports. Mick did more taste testing than she did too, the vaginal screwing proving he was the more active partner this time as she kicked back to enjoy him doing most of the work. Given the red marks on her ass in the form of a handprint, I also got the impression that this one was edited to lighten things up a bit, the rougher sex largely missing from the end result. This helped make it a more couples oriented piece of work though, his wealth of genetic juice gracing her mouth when all was said and done.

Summary: A Taste of Stoya by director Robby D. for Digital Playground was one of those times when the featured performer, in this case Stoya, just didn't seem to be all there, the result being a movie I figured was worthy of a Rent It label even for Stoya's biggest fans. The movie wasn't a terrible one but given the potential it had to really rock the house, even the editing by Joey Pulgadas couldn't save it any more than the camera work by Robby and Jim could show the heat that wasn't there. In short, fans of Stoya will definitely want to check out A Taste of Stoya when it comes out next month, the milky white cutie providing a lot of "stroke-itude" in her looks alone, the rest of the cast sexually on par with the performances offered up by Stoya here.
